Seven Cajuns connected from long range in the win

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – From their very first attempt of the night, the Louisiana men's basketball team had it going from long range, setting a school record with 18 made threes on Wednesday, November 15 against Louisiana Christian.

The Cajuns won their 17th consecutive game in the Cajundome, matching the second-longest winning streak in facility history, in a 107-56 win over the Wildcats.

Kentrell Garnett led the way with 20 points, tying a career-high. Joe Charles recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, becoming the first Cajun since 1971-72 to start the year with three-straight double-doubles, and recorded five assists.

Kobe Julien added 16 points with five assists. Themus Fulks finished the night with nine points, seven assists, and four rebounds while Hosana Kitenge added nine points and three steals. Every Cajun who saw action scored at least six points and registered 15-plus minutes. Kyran Ratliff led all players with a career-high 11 rebounds in just his third game at Louisiana.

"We were just open and just took the shots we had," said Garnett. "Coach (Bob) Marlin said that we had to shoot it better. So we just got on a run and started making threes."

Garnett and Julien connected from deep on the team's first two possessions of the game. The Wildcats had it going on the offensive end early and took a 12-9 lead. Garnett connected on threes on back-to-back possessions and it was all Cajuns from there.

Blake Butler hit a three of his own, then Garnett followed with a personal 8-0 run to push the lead to 14. Kitenge went to work and scored six straight points to put the Cajuns ahead 32-14. A layup by London Fields, his first collegiate basket, ballooned the lead to 20. The Wildcats answered with four points before Brandon Hardy registered his first career basket with a three.

A pair of Michael Thomas threes sandwiched around a Kyran Ratliff layup pushed the lead over 30 before the half.

The Cajuns continued to control the pace in the second half and held the Wildcats to just six made field goals. The defense held the visiting team without a made three, 0-for-10, and have held opponents this season to 5-of-42 from three, 11.9 percent.

"Having a guy like Kentrell (Garnett) shooting and scoring 20 points in the first half is a testimony to our team always finding a hot hand," said Kitenge. "Gelling together is something that I'm seeing and that we're improving day by day. That's the biggest thing that I'm seeing, just how together we are as a team. We're just looking to build off that and capitalize on the momentum now."

The team finished the night shooting 51.4 percent (38-of-74) from the field and 18-of-41 from three, tying the program record for attempts.

The Cajuns are off to Estero, Florida for the Gulf Coast Showcase starting next Monday against Wright State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT from the Hertz Arena with live coverage on KPEL 96.5 FM.
