STATESBORO, Ga. – Isabel Kopp's unassisted goal midway through the 78th minute broke a 1-1 deadlock before defending Sun Belt Conference regular-season champion Georgia Southern scored an insurance goal less than a minute later to pull away and claim a 3-1 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on Thursday at Eagle Field at Erk Park.
Simone Timm and Bri Conley each scored a goal and added an assist for Georgia Southern (6-5-0, 1-3-0 SBC) which claimed its first league victory of the season and snapped a three-match losing streak.
Goalkeeper Makenna Garcia helped Louisiana (4-6-2, 1-4-0 SBC) keep the Eagles off the board for much of the match as she stopped seven shots overall, including a pair of point-blank attempts in the 50th minute.
Timm would break a scoreless contest in the 60th minute after taking a pass from Conley at the top of the 18-yard box and beating Garcia to the left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
After Lauren Bennett and Emma Bates had shot attempts stopped by Georgia Southern goalkeeper Michaela Mikko, Louisiana would respond in the 69th minute when Briana Henry sent in a blast from the right side of the 18-yard box and scored past Mikko for the equalizer.
But the Eagles would reclaim the lead at the 77:30 mark when Kopp's left-footed blast got past a diving Garcia for a 2-1 lead before Timm would assist on Conley's goal 30 seconds later to help seal the contest.
Carley Borgelt attempted five of the Eagles' 23 shots in the match with Timm placing all four of her attempts on frame. Mikko stopped four shots for Georgia Southern.
Henry attempted a pair of shots to lead Louisiana with Mary Meuth placing a shot on frame. Senior Karleen Bedre, who started in her school-record 81st career match, had a shot on frame for the Ragin' Cajuns while Tatum Beck, Mariella Stephens and Bailey Giddings each had a shot attempt.
Louisiana will return to SBC play on Sunday when it hosts Southern Miss in the annual Pink Match at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the match being streamed live on ESPN+.
