The freshman won four matches en route to the title
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Just a few months into his collegiate career Samuel Kyjaci has already taken home some hardware with a win at the CCB Collegiate Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama. The freshman knocked off Gabriele Datei (Georgia State) in a third set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(7), to win the Blue Singles Draw.
Kyjaci started the weekend with a win over Edward Tymes (Georgia State), 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, before holding off David Jeanne Grandinot (Alabama State), 7-5, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals. There he took another three-set thriller in defeating Jim Hendrikx (Washington), 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 to advance to the finals.
He nearly faced teammate Vasil Dimitrov in those finals. Dimitrov dispatched his first two opponents, Maxwell Giddens (Samford), 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, and Izan Orgiles (North Alabama), 5-7, 7-2, 7-6 (6), to reach the semis before falling to Datei in straight sets.
Mason Landreth had a strong showing in the Red Singles Draw after falling in the opening round to Hady Elkordy (Tulane). The freshman then defeated Juan Pablo Valdez Guzon (UAB), 6-2, 5-7, 10-8, and Naufal Kamaruzzaman (Georgia State), 6-2, 6-4 for his two wins on the weekend.
In the Red Doubles Draw, Kyjaci and Grant Landreth fell in the opening round before winning the remainder of their matches. They held off Javier Montoya and Theo Mottier from South Alabama, 6-4, before closing the event with a 6-2 victory over David Jeanne Grandinot and Matteo Lataste (Alabama State).
The Cajuns head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the UNLV Invitational next weekend to close out their fall schedule.
