Ragin' Cajuns tie for third-lowest 36-hole score in school history
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Eli Ortego recorded his fourth round in the 60's during the 2023-24 season with a 2-under-par 69 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team posted its third-best 36-hole start in school history after completing the second round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Friday at the Ka'anapail Golf Club.

The final round of the 54-hole event – the fall portion of Louisiana's 2023-24 schedule – will begin on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. CT shotgun start. Live results for the three-day event is available courtesy of GolfStat.com.

Louisiana, which slipped one spot to 11th in the 20-team field, recorded a team score of 2-under-282 – its second-lowest of the season and 13th of 14 rounds of finishing at par or below in the 2023-24 season.

The Ragin' Cajuns finished at 6-under-562 after 36 holes, their best two-round start since a 15-under-553 at the 2013 Sam Hall Intercollegiate while equaling the mark set in both 2007 (ASU Indiana Classic) and 2011 (The Sam Hall Intercollegiate).

Ortego, who opened with an even-par 71 in Thursday's opening round, shot 2-under-32 on the back nine for Louisiana recording birdies at both No. 11 and 17. The Lafayette native added birdies on the front nine at No. 3 and 9 and finished 2-under-140 after two rounds.

Malan Potgieter, Burke Alford and Dylan Keating each posted rounds of even-par 71 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Potgieter finishing at the top of Louisiana's lineup at 4-under-138.

The sophomore opened the day with a pair of bogeys on his first two holes before recording an eagle on the par-5, 485-yard No. 9. Potgieter added a birdie on the back nine at No. 13 and proceeded to sink birdies at No. 3 and 6 to close out his day.

Alford, who posted an identical even-par 71 on Thursday, sank a team-high six birdies in the round for Louisiana with five coming on the front nine. The Shreveport native worked his back from a 3-over-par through nine holes beginning with a birdie at No. 18 before getting back to even-par with birdies at No. 1 and 2.

Keating posted a 1-over-35 on the back nine before coming back with birdies at No. 2 and 4 to finish at even-par for the round and 2-over-144 after 36 holes.

Jake Marler finished one stroke behind Keating after 36 holes after recording a 3-over-74 on the day. Marler dropped three birdies on the front nine before shooting a 3-over-37 on the back.

First-day leader Liberty maintained its lead after shooting a 12-under-272 to finish at 34-under-534. The Flames finished five strokes ahead of a pair of top-15 ranked teams – East Tennessee State (539) and Oklahoma (539) – with North Florida (545) and San Jose State (547) rounding out the top five.

Mats Ege of ETSU and Josh Ryan of Liberty shared the individual lead after 36 holes at 12-under-130. First-day leader Robbie Higgins of UNF was tied for third at 131.
