Louisiana part of 20-team field; makes seventh trip to Hawaii in last nine years
LAHAINA, Hawai'i – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team wraps up the fall portion of its 2023-24 schedule beginning on Thursday when it opens play in the three-day, Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on the Royal Ka'anapali Course at Ka'anapail Golf Club.
Â
The 54-hole event will tee off daily through Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CDT on the par-71, 6,700-yar course with live results provided by GolfStat.com.
Â
Louisiana, which makes its seventh trip to Hawaii in the last nine years and second consecutive to Royal Ka'anapali, is part of a 20-team field which is hosted by the University of Hawaii. Also included in the field four teams in the latest GolfWeek.com rankings – No. 8 East Tennessee State, defending champion and 14th-ranked Oklahoma, No. 30 North Florida and No. 37 Georgia.
Â
Rounding out the field includes Air Force, Boise State, Clemson, Colorado, Cal State-Northridge, Denver, Gonzaga, Kansas, Liberty, Mount St. Mary's, Sacramento State, San Jose State, UConn and Wyoming.
Â
The ninth edition of the tournament returns to the island of Maui, which parts of – including Lahaina – were severely affected by the recent wildfires in August.
Â
"We are honored and excited to come back to Maui for our final event of the fall season," said head coach Theo Sliman. "On our journey from the airport to Ka'anapali, we drove just east of Lahaina. Words cannot give an accurate description of the damage and trauma this place experienced.
Â
"Seeing the excitement in the eyes of the community that we (the tournament field) are here certainly makes us feel like we are doing a small part in their rebuild. We send continued prayers and support needed for Lahaina, Maui Strong."
Â
Louisiana, with four top-five finishes in as many events during the fall, will be led by Eli Ortego (70.67) in the No. 1 slot in the lineup. In last year's event, Ortego posted a school-record 8-under-par 63 in the final round while Louisiana posted school-records for lowest team round (17-under-267) and 54-hole total (830).
Jake Marler (72.58) will play in the second spot for the Ragin' Cajuns with Malan Potgieter (71.50), Burke Alford (72.22) and Dylan Keating (73.00) rounding out the lineup.
Â
In partnership with two non-profit organizations, a fundraising campaign was launched to benefit Maui's wildfire victims, including Ka'anapali Golf Courses' own associates who tragically lost everything.
Â
"It will be a somber yet joyous tournament to support those affected by the fires," said Hawai'i men's golf coach, Scott Simpson.
