Dimitrov, Landreth Duo Reach Round of 16 at ITA Regionals

AUBURN, Alabama - The doubles tandem of Vasil Dimitrov and Mason Landreth reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Regionals in Auburn, Alabama. They won the first two rounds before their run was ended by Nikola Slavic and Lukas Englehardt of Ole Miss, 8-6, who came in ranked No. 8 in the country.
The duo won the opening round thanks to an injury withdrawal before winning in the Round of 32 over JB Pickard and Maksim Bogdanovic from Samford, 8-5.
They weren't the only ones with a strong showing at the regionals with Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez winning a pair of matches to reach the main draw of the event. The senior had to work for it in the opening round of qualifying, knocking off William Landy of Mississippi State in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.
He followed that with a victory over Tulane's Sam Scherer 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the final round of qualifying. There he held off Noah Martens from Troy in a three-set thriller, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-9), 10-7, to reach the main draw.
William Ribero won a pair of matches in the qualifying rounds beating Benji Jacobson of Tulane, 6-4, 6-0, and Marko Milosavljevic of Jacksonville State, 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. His run was ended in the final qualifying round by Javier Montoya from South Alabama, 6-4, 6-1. In a consolation match, Ribero would come away victorious over Jacksonville State's Liam Day, 6-4, 6-3.
Dimitrov earned one singles victory in qualifying. He defeated Tulane's Will Kesterson, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, but then fell to LSU's Julien Penzlin, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. He closed the weekend with a win against Tulane's Billy Suarez, 6-1, 4-6, 10-3.
Oriol Fillat Gimenez was also victorious over an opponent hailing from Tulane, beating Alec Gaudin, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), in his first qualifying match before falling to Mississippi State's Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes, 7-5, 6-0. He closed the weekend with a victory over Izan Orgiles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), from North Alabama.
Landreth fell in his opening singles match to UAB's Ondrej Valek, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3. Fellow freshman Samuel Kyjaci also fell in his opening match to Raul Dobai of Auburn, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
The Cajuns return home for the Cajuns Classic beginning Friday, October 20 from Oakbourne Country Club and City Club at River Ranch.
