Ragin' Cajuns fall into consolation game with Charlotte on Saturday
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team was dealt a 4-0 setback by No. 11 Tennessee in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, January 27 at Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Vols (5-2) moved on to the Tennessee Regional championship match to face Oklahoma while the Ragin' Cajuns (1-3) dropped into the consolation match and will face Charlotte, both matches set for Saturday, January 28.
Tennessee set the tone quickly in doubles with a 6-0 win on Court 3, then clinched the point after Pat Harper and Johannus Monday completed a 6-2 win over Louisiana's No. 30-ranked duo of Karlo Kajin and Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez.
Sanchez Gonzlaez rebounded in singles by starting off with a 6-4 win in the opening set on Court 1. Vasil Dimitrov was the other Ragin' Cajuns to get off to a 1-0 lead when he out-dueled Blaise Bicknell in an 11-9 tiebreak to capture the first set on Court 3 by a 7-6 count.
Sanchez Gonzalez and Dimitrov's progress was halted, though, as the Vols completed sweeps at Nos. 6, 2 and 4 singles to clinch the match.
Friday's match marked Louisiana's first appearance in the ITA Kickoff Weekend since January 2015 when the then-regining Sun Belt champions were in Los Angeles for a regional hosted by USC.

Louisiana completes play in the prestigious ITA Kickoff Weekend, one of the marquee events of the spring season in NCAA Division I tennis, on Saturday, January 28 meeting Charlotte (2-3) in the consolation match of the Tennessee Regional. The Ragin' Cajuns and 49ers are slated to begin play at 9:00 a.m. (CST) in the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The matchup with Charlotte will bring to an end Louisiana's season-opening, five-match road trip and a stretch of facing five straight opponents that were ranked in the ITA's final 2022 poll.
