Louisiana's last appearance in the ITA Kickoff Weekend came in the 2015 season when the Ragin' Cajuns, then defending champions of the Sun Belt Conference, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., for a regional hosted by USC.
The Ragin' Cajuns spot in the 2023 edition of the Kickoff Weekend was earned following last season's 17-win regular season and the team's finish at No. 61 in the spring 2022 dual match season final rankings.
ABOUT LOUISIANA
The 2023 Ragin' Cajuns are closing out a season-opening, five-match road stretch during their stay in Knoxville. The ITA Kickoff Weekend field continues a season-opening stretch of formidable opponents for Louisiana which has already faced three teams that were ranked in the ITA's final 2022 poll, a list that includes Texas Tech (No. 41), Portland (No. 74) and Washington (No. 39). All three opponents in the Tennessee Regional finished the 2022 season ranked inside the Top 50: Tennessee (No. 6), Oklahoma (No. 34) and Charlotte (No. 48).
Last weekend the Ragin' Cajuns split matches with Portland and Washington during its trip to Seattle, capturing a 4-3 thriller over the Pilots when Alejo Ferrer Chueca completed his comeback to capture Court 3 in three sets. Key to the win over UP was the Ragin' Cajuns claiming the doubles points, as in both defeats so far this young season (TTU and UW) the squad has dropped the doubles point leading to the opposition clinching the match by quickly building 4-0 leads.
Karlo Kajin is leading Louisiana in singles play with a 3-0 record - his best start of a season in singles of his collegiate career. Senior Kacper Dworak is coming off a 2-0 weekend in Seattle, with his win in the Washington match keeping the Ragin' Cajuns undefeated at the No. 5 singles slot (3-0).
Kajin and his doubles partner Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez entered the dual match season ranked No. 30 in the ITA's doubles rankings. Louisiana's No. 1 doubles pairing is off to a 1-2 start, though both defeats have come by narrow margins (L, 3-6 at Texas Tech; L, 4-6 at Washington).
