Louisiana Drops Hard Fought Battle at Mississippi State, 5-2

Yoshimura, Urchoeguia claim three-set victories in 2023 debut
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Momoko Yoshimura and Carla Urchoeguia each claimed a pair of three-set victories in singles action, but Mississippi State won the doubles point and four of six singles matches in earning a 5-2 win over Louisiana in the 2023 spring debut for both teams on Sunday at the Lula Tennis Pavilion.
Yoshimura claimed a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win for Louisiana (0-1) over Mississippi State's Dharani Niroshan at No. 5 singles before Urchoeguia defeated Gia Cohen at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 1-0 (12-10).
Mississippi State (1-0), which earned its 54th consecutive victory over a non-conference opponent at home, took the doubles point with Emma Antonaki and Cohen defeating Urchoeguia and Angelique Berrat at No. 1, 6-1, before Alexandra Mikhailuk and Maria Rizzolo earned a 6-0 victory at No. 2 over Yoshimura and Cristine Tchanichev.
The Bulldogs received victories in singles action from Antonaki, Mikhailuk, Chloe Cirotte and Emily Surcey to stake a 5-0 lead before Louisiana claimed the final two matches of the day.
Louisiana is scheduled to return to action on Jan. 29 when it travels to Houston, Texas to face Rice in an 11 a.m. match. The Ragin' Cajuns will open their 11-match home schedule on Friday, Feb. 10 when it faces Southern University in an 11 a.m. contest at Cajun Courts.
