Ragin’ Cajuns Reverse Course with Incredible Run, Finish Series Sweep of ASU

Louisiana overcomes 10-point deficit in second set to prevent Arkansas State from taking control
LAFAYETTE – With a 12-0 run to close out the second set the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team altered the course of Friday's match with Arkansas State at Earl K. Long Gym and landed a 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-16) win to complete a Sun Belt series sweep.
Before the magical run, the Ragin' Cajuns (9-4, 3-1 Sun Belt) trailed 23-13 and were in danger of falling into a 2-0 match deficit against the Red Wolves (5-11, 0-4 Sun Belt).
In stepped Kelsey Bennett with a kill to ignite the scoring spree, which she served out the entirety of after picking up in critical sideout. She served up an ace to trim the deficit to 23-21, then followed a series of four straight kills – which began with a pair of Lauryn Hill scores – that completed the comeback and evened the match.
Louisiana had to withstand an early six-point spurt from ASU in Set 3 that gave the visitors a 6-2 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns answered back quickly, taking a 7-6 lead off a Coco Gillett kill and keeping the pressure on with a Bennett kill for an 11-6 edge.
The Red Wolves battled back into a 22-all tie, but Bennett delivered once more with a tiebreaking kill. Hill and Mya Wilson preserved the separation with a block on the ensuing rally leading to Louisiana capturing the match lead.
Back-to-back kills from Gillett and Bennett vaulted the Ragin' Cajuns into the lead for good in Set 4, then the lead advanced to 8-3 giving the hosts control. ASU crept within three points only to have miscues keep the momentum on Louisiana's side.
The final result was cemented after the last three-point margin, 13-10, when Gillett and Bennett combined for four kills during a 5-2 run that stretched the Ragin' Cajuns lead out to 18-12.
Louisiana won the offensive battle with a 51-47 edge in kills and a .214 hitting percentage and held decisive advantages in digs (85-75) and blocks (10-5). ASU's .131 hitting percentage marked the sixth straight match the Ragin' Cajuns held the opposition to a sub-.200 clip.
The rally in Set 2 allowed Louisiana to continue its season-long streak of not being swept – a span of 13 matches and 52 sets played.
Coupled with Thursday's straight sets sweep of the Red Wolves, the result completed the Ragin' Cajuns two-match sweep of the Sun Belt series and extend the squad's winning streak to three matches.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Bennett peppered the Red Wolves with 18 kills on a .340 hitting percentage. She added 17 digs to go along with the impressive run at the service line that flipped the script of the contest.
Wilson produced nine kills and led the Ragin' Cajuns with six blocks. Hill chipped in eight kills and rounded up an impressive 23 digs (season-high total) with 10 scoops alone coming in the third set.
Gillett was a key player in the turnaround as she generated six kills and 14 digs after switching out of the libero jersey following the opening set. After being inserted in at libero to start Set 2, Jordan Valley collected 13 digs and a pair of aces while also serving up key scoring runs.
Gillett also had a hand in five blocks while Cami Hicks posted four blocks to reach the 200-mark in her collegiate career.
