Texas State Strikes First in the Sun Belt West Battle with Louisiana

10/7/2022 9:22:00 PM | Volleyball

Ragin’ Cajuns seek to even up the two-match SBC series on Saturday

LAFAYETTE – Texas State used a balanced and highly efficient offensive attack and produced timely scoring runs to overcome the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team in Friday night's 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) win at Earl K. Long Gym.

The visiting Bobcats (12-5, 4-1 Sun Belt) saw five players post at least six kills to pace an attack that generated 43 kills off 100 swings on a .330 hitting percentage.

The Ragin' Cajuns (9-5, 3-2 Sun Belt) found themselves trailing 20-13 in the latter stages of each set, a deficit which proved to be insurmountable each time.

Louisiana was unable to get its offense untracked and finished the night with 29 kills off of 106 swings and a .123 hitting percentage.

It was a fast start for the Ragin' Cajuns who scored the first three points of the opening set and advanced the lead to 6-2 after a Lauryn Hill kill. Texas State worked its way back into a series of ties before an 11-1 run created separation from a 12-all tie that Louisiana generated off a Cami Hicks kill.

The Bobcats landed the first four points of Set 2 and never trailed in gaining a 2-0 match lead.

After falling behind 9-3, the Ragin' Cajuns rallied getting kills from Coco Gillett, Kelsey Bennett and Hill during a stretch where the deficit was sliced to 12-8. A timely block followed for Texas State, setting off a string of four straight points that extended the lead back out.

Untimely service errors appeared for Louisiana each time the squad crept within three points in the third set. The last handed Texas State a 13-9 advantage and was part of a 7-1 run that put the visitors ahead 19-10.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Bennett and Hill led the way on offense, tied for the team lead with eight kills apiece.

Hicks had a hand in all three of the Ragin' Cajuns blocks. Hill was in on a pair of stuffs and paced the team with nine digs.

Kara Barnes, who missed the previous two weeks, returned to action and delivered three kills.

Jordan Valley passed out five assists, had the lone service ace of the contest and served out several runs highlighted by a three-point spurt that prompted a Texas State timeout at the end of the first set.
