Ragin' Cajuns rewarded for highly successful spring campaign
LAFAYETTE - A 17-win regular season and landing at No. 61 in the spring 2022 dual match season final rankings set up the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team for a spot in the 2023 ITA Kickoff Weekend, the premier regular season tournament in collegiate tennis.
Louisiana (17-6, 4-2 Sun Belt in 2022) has been selected to travel to Knoxville, Tenn, for the Tennessee Regional of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Joining the Ragin' Cajuns there from Friday-Saturday, Jan. 27-28, 2023 will be No. 6 Tennessee, No. 34 Oklahoma and No. 48 Charlotte.
In the opening round of play in the Tennessee Regional on Friday (Jan. 27), the Ragin' Cajuns are slated to face the host-Vols with the other matchup featuring Oklahoma and Charlotte.
The two winners of Friday's matches will play on Saturday (Jan. 28) in the regional final while the two losers will clash in the consolation match, also played on Saturday.
The winner of the Tennessee Regional advances to the ITA Indoor National Championships in Champaign, Ill., hosted by the University of Illinois.
The field for the tournament was decided via the ITA Men's Kickoff Weekend Draft, with teams from around the country receiving the opportunity to choose which host site they would prefer to play at. The 15 host sites were predetermined based on the 2022 season-end rankings. Selection order was based on year-end finish, starting with the No. 16 ranked team and running until all of the spots were filled.
Louisiana's last appearance in the ITA Kickoff Weekend came in the 2015 season when the Ragin' Cajuns, then defending champions of the Sun Belt Conference, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., for a regional hosted by USC.
ABOUT LOUISIANA
The first season under the guidance of head coach Luc Godin saw the Ragin' Cajuns finish as one of only two teams ranked in the state of Louisiana, trailing only LSU (No. 33). Louisiana was the highest ranked team inside the Sun Belt Conference, finishing ahead of Georgia State (No. 62) and South Alabama (No. 68).
The 2022 Ragin' Cajuns built a 17-win regular season on the strength of an impressive 14-match win streak which included quality wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Rice, Texas Tech, ETSU, and UTSA, and along the way captured the title at the prestigious H-E-B Tournament of Champions. The winning streak, and the squad's 15-1 start that ran through mid-March, marked the program's best marks in the 2000s era.
Louisiana earned the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by racing out to a 4-0 start in league play which included an impressive 4-1 win over No. 1 seed Georgia State on March 27 at Cajun Courts.
Singles play was the hallmark of Louisiana's success this spring. All-Sun Belt honorees Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez (15-5), Oriol Fillat Gimenez (16-4), Vasil Dimitrov (15-7) and Calin Postea (14-4) comprised the team's quartet of double-digit winners that combined for 60 of the 77 singles victories in regular season play.
