No. 60 Louisiana welcomes No. 50 Florida Atlantic for final match this spring at Cajun Courts
LAFAYETTE - The No. 60-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team hosts a nationally ranked matchup at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 as No. 50 Florida Atlantic visits Cajun Courts for a non-conference contest.
The match serves as both the regular season and home finale for the Ragin' Cajuns (17-4) in the spring 2022 dual match season. It's the squad's final outing before competing for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title from April 14-17 in Peachtree City, Ga.
Admission is free and open the public. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and tailgate on the front lawn of Cajun Courts.
Louisiana seeks to impose its home court advantage on Florida Atlantic (15-4) in a similar fashion to the squad's fate on last week's Sun Belt road trip through the state of Alabama. The Ragin' Cajuns were dealt back-to-back setbacks at South Alabama and Troy - places where visiting teams had won only once in both locations, combined, all season long entering the weekend.
The Ragin' Cajuns are a perfect 6-0 at Cajun Courts in the spring 2022 dual match season. During the last homestand, March 25-27, the squad posted an impressive sweep of Georgia Southern and Georgia State, with both wins clinched at 4-1.
While Louisiana seeks to bounce back from its first back-to-back losses of the season, which didn't happen until April, the Owls arrive in Lafayette on a four-match winning streak,
It's another opportunity for the Ragin' Cajuns to add to the list of quality wins collected this spring in their debut with first-year head coach Luc Godin. The list already includes wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Rice, Texas Tech, ETSU and UTSA back in February, plus the win over newly ranked No. 65 Georgia State on the last homestand.
Louisiana, standing at 74-40 in singles play, is led by 15-game winners Oriol Fillat Gimenez (15-4) and Vasil Dimitrov (15-6) and fellow double-figure singles winners Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez (14-5) and Calin Postea (13-4). Sanchez Gonzalez and Fillat Gimenez have led the charge at the top the lineup throughout the season on Courts 2 and 3, with Sanchez Gonzalez recently bumping up to Court 1 and posting a solid 2-1 mark the past two weekends. Dimitrov has controlled play at singles No. 6 with a 9-2 mark while Postea has been an impressive 9-4 combined covering at Courts 4 and 5.
The Ragin' Cajuns have seen strong play at the top of the doubles lineup with the No. 1 pairing of Karlo Kajin and Sanchez Gonzalez sporting a 12-6 mark and the No. 2 tandem of Fillat Gimenez and Dimitrov standing at 10-8. Louisiana has won the doubles point in four of the six outings at Cajun Courts this spring.
FAU has a foursome of double-digit winners in singles play this spring as well. The Owls are led by Finn Stodder (13-2), Alvaro Fernandez Horta (13-3), Kevin Huempfner (12-3) and Gerard Escandell (10-7). Similar to the Ragin' Cajuns, the squad has been tough to get by on Courts 2 and 3 with a combined overall mark of 26-7 at those positions (led by Huempfner with a 7-0 record at No. 2 and Fernandez Horta with an 11-3 mark at No. 3).Â
The Owls' success in doubles in spread evenly across the three spots with the team claiming double-digit wins at Nos. 1-3 for a team mark of 31-16. The top grouping for FAU is Carles Sarrio and Hunter Robbins on Court 1 who together have been nationally ranked much of the season and are 7-3 at the No. 1 position.Â
