Owls capture tiebreaker on fourth and final court that went to three sets

LAFAYETTE - The No. 60-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team treated its fans to a highly competitive battle in the spring 2022 home finale on Thursday, April 7 at Cajun Courts, but it was No. 50 Florida Atlantic playing spoiler by rallying on the final two active courts to claim a 4-3 win.

The two teams split the six singles matchups, with four of the courts going to a decisive third set, and the match-clinching point decided in a winner-take-all tiebreaker.

Louisiana (17-5) forged ahead in the match following straight set wins in singles play from Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez and Oriol Fillat Gimenez on Courts 1 and 2, respectively, and moved within a point of clinching when Calin Postea's 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win on Court 3 opened a 3-1 advantage.

FAU (16-4) snapped the Ragin' Cajuns string of consecutive singles wins when Finn Stodder completed his comeback from a first-set defeat to Alejo Ferrer Chueca on Court 6, setting the stage for the neck-and-neck race to the finish line.

In the remaining third-set battles, the Ragin' Cajuns were on the verge of clinching with Vasil Dimitrov holding a 4-3 lead on Court 5 and Kacper Dworak later clinging to a 5-4 advantage on Court 4.

The Owls' Gerard Escandell evened the match after scoring three unanswered points to rally past Dimitrov. The final result then came down to a back-and-forth finish between Dworak and Nicolas Jadoun which went to the winner-take-all tiebreaker where Jadoun recovered from a 4-3 deficit to claim the match victory for the visiting Owls.

Earlier in the day the Owls picked up the all-important decisive point in the contest when fast starts in doubles play on Courts 1 and 2 led to the point landing in their favor. FAU started off with a 3-0 advantage on both courts and never relinquished the lead.

The hard-luck defeat was the third straight for Louisiana to close the regular season. It was the team's first loss in seven outings at Cajun Courts this spring.

Sanchez Gonzalez (15-5 overall) continued his solid play since moving up to the singles No. 1 slot, improving to 3-1 since assuming the spot back on March 27 vs. Georgia State. Fillat Gimenez (16-4 overall) earned his team-leading 16th win of the season, winning in his Court 2 debut. The duo took down FAU's Carles Sarrio and Kevin Huempfner who entered the day with a combined 21 wins. Huempfner, now 12-4 on the season, fell on Court 2 for the first time (7-1).
