Five-run, fourth inning difference as Ragin' Cajuns fall to No. 22-ranked LSU
Tre' Morgan and Jordan Thompson each recorded home runs for LSU (24-12) while starting pitcher Ty Floyd (4-2) struck out eight batters in five innings on the mound to lead the Tigers. Josh Stevenson and Josh Pearson drove in runs in the fifth inning as LSU finished with seven hits in the game.
Morgan broke open a scoreless game in the second inning when he hit a solo home run off Louisiana starter Cooper Rawls before the Ragin' Cajuns would answer when Kimple led off the third inning with a towering home run that cleared the left-field bleachers.
Louisiana took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Roccaforte belted his eighth home run of the season – a one-out, solo shot which cleared the left-field fence.
LSU regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Cade Doughty led off with a double and scored two batters later when Thompson homered off Brandon Talley (2-2) to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. After Brayden Jobert reached on an error and Tyler McManus struck out, Stevenson reached on a two-out walk before Pearson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Dylan Crews then hit a two-run single off Ragin' Cajuns reliever Tommy Ray to give LSU a 5-2 lead before the Tigers would later load the bases and add their third unearned run of the frame when Doughty was hit by a pitch and allowing Pearson to score.
Stevenson's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning scored Thompson to give LSU a 7-2 lead before Pearson dribbled a double just inside the third-base line to score Jobert.
Louisiana attempted a comeback in the seventh after loading the bases as Kimple drew a one-out walk, Julian Brock reached on an infield single and CJ Willis reached on an error. Kyle DeBarge kept the inning alive as he reached on a fielder's choice and Marusak followed with a single to score Brock and Willis.
Brock led Louisiana at the plate finishing 2-for-4. Tyler Robertson went 0-for-3 for the Ragin' Cajuns and saw his 14-game hitting snapped while Louisiana's top six hitters in the lineup went a combined 2-for-24 at the plate.
Louisiana will return to action beginning Friday when it opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Georgia State. First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 5 p.m. CT with Saturday's contest set for 3 p.m. CT and Sunday's finale at 10 a.m. CT.
