LAFAYETTE - The No. 47-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team will attempt to remain atop the Sun Belt Conference's standings during a two-match homestand at Cajun Courts from Friday-Sunday, March 25-27.
The Ragin' Cajuns (15-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) face off with Georgia Southern (7-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) on Friday starting at 3:00 p.m., then on Sunday take on Georgia State (10-6, 2-0 Sun Belt) in an 11 a.m. match.
Admission to both matches is free. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and tailgate on the front lawn of Cajun Courts. Links for live stats can be accessed from the men's tennis schedule page at RaginCajuns.com.
The weekend set with the Eagles and Panthers marks the start of four consecutive Sun Belt Conference outings for the league-leading Ragin' Cajuns who are slated to visit South Alabama (April 2) and Troy (April 3) the following weekend.
A LOOK AT LOUISIANA
Louisiana is unbeaten on its home court in the spring 2022 dual match season, sporting a 4-0 mark which includes a 5-2 win over Coastal Carolina back on March 5 in the Sun Belt Conference opener.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained in the leading position of the Sun Belt standings last Friday following a 4-3 road win at UT Arlington that was clinched when reigning conference player of the week Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez outlasted Miguel Cabrera, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, to wrap up the match in favor of Louisiana.Â
On Friday vs. Georgia Southern, the Ragin' Cajuns will be seeking to rebound from their first loss in over two months. In a matchup of then-Top 40 ranked teams on Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas, it was Oklahoma snapping Louisiana's season-best, 14-match winning streak with a 6-1 decision. In the contest with the Sooners, Sanchez Gonzalez posted a straight sets win over No. 68 Alex Martinez.
Outstanding singles play has been the hallmark of Louisiana's success under the guidance of first-year head coach Luc Godin. Leading the team's 63-30 mark in singles action is a quartet of double-digit winners: Oriol Fillat Gimenez (14-2), Calin Postea (12-3), Vasil Dimitrov (12-5) and Sanchez Gonzalez (11-4).Â
In doubles play, Sanchez Gonzalez and his partner Karlo Kajin are on a five-game winning streak and sport an impressive 10-4 season record at No. 1 doubles. The Ragin' Cajuns are 27-16 in doubles play with all tandems carrying a winning record. Fillat Gimenez and Dimitrov stand at 9-6 on Court 2 and the pairing of Postea and Kacper Dworak sports a 7-5 record on Court 3.Â
Louisiana has captured the doubles point in five of the last six matches. Postea and Dworak won an exciting tiebreaker in the team's last Sun Belt match at Cajun Courts vs. Coastal Carolina on March 5.
THE OPPOSITION
Georgia Southern opened Sun Belt play last weekend with a split at home, falling to South Alabama and rebounding with a win over Troy - both matches decided by a 4-2 count. The Eagles are led in singles by Tao Castillo's 8-2 record combined over appearances on Courts 2 and 3 and in doubles it's Castillo who has joined with Alex Suk to form the team's most successful tandem.
Georgia State is coming off a home sweep of Troy and South Alabama last weekend, closing with a 4-0 shutout of the defending conference champion Jaguars. Fifth-year senior Andrei Duarte finished the weekend unbeaten in No.1 singles and doubles as he improved to 11-3 overall in singles and extended his winning streak with Roberts Grinvalds at No. 1 doubles to seven games.Â
