Fourth different Ragin' Cajun to receive the honor in spring 2022 dual match season

LAFAYETTE - Clinching a Sun Belt Conference victory for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team and capturing a win over a nationally ranked foe last weekend (March 18-20) has earned Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez the Sun Belt Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week award.

Awarded on Wednesday (March 23, 2022), it's the first weekly honor of Sanchez Gonzalez's collegiate career.

Sanchez Gonzalez is the fourth Ragin' Cajun to receive the honor in the spring 2022 dual match season. He joins teammates Karlo Kajin (Feb. 9), Oriol Fillat Gimenez (Feb. 16) and Calin Postea (March 9) in being honored by the league. Louisiana leads the SBC with four individual winners this spring.

Louisiana's No. 2 singles player, Sanchez Gonzalez posted a 2-0 mark in singles competition this past week as he clinched the team's 4-3 Sun Belt Conference road win over UT Arlington on Friday, March 18 and defeated No. 68 Alex Martinez of Oklahoma in straight sets on Sunday, March 20 in Fort Worth, Texas.

With Friday's match at UTA knotted at 3-all, Sanchez Gonzalez outlasted reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Miguel Cabrera, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, to wrap up the match in favor of Louisiana and keep the Ragin' Cajuns undefeated in conference play, and atop the league's standings. His straight sets sweep on Sunday marked just the fourth time No. 68 Martinez of Oklahoma fell in dual match play this spring.

In doubles play, Sanchez Gonzalez and his partner, Kajin, defeated UTA's No. 1 pairing of Anton Shepp and Miguel Cabrera and were deadlocked with OU's 69th-rated tandem of Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard just before the doubles point was clinched.

Louisiana's primary No. 2 singles player throughout the spring, Sanchez Gonzalez is one of four team members with double-digit singles victories currently standing at 11-4 - all results on Court 2. He is one win shy of his 20th career collegiate singles win (went 8-7 as a freshman in 2021). In doubles play, Sanchez Gonzaelz and Kajin are on a five-game winning streak and sport an impressive 10-4 season record at No. 1 doubles.

No. 47 Louisiana (15-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) returns home to Cajun Courts in Lafayette for a weekend of Sun Belt Conference matchups, hosting Georgia Southern at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 25 and Georgia State at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 27.
