No. 38 Louisiana takes in Sun Belt match, faces a Top 40 challenge
ARLINGTON, Texas - The No. 38 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team is headquartering in the Dallas-Fort Worth area the weekend of Friday-Sunday, March 18-20 for matchups with UT Arlington and No. 37 Oklahoma.
First up is the visit to UTA on Friday for a Sun Belt Conference match set to begin at 12:00 p.m. from the UTA Tennis Center. Both the Ragin' Cajuns (14-1,1-0 Sun Belt), winners of 13 straight matches, and the Mavericks (11-6, 0-0 Sun Belt), winners of three straight, put winning streaks to the test.
Then on Sunday, the Ragin' Cajuns face a Top 40-challenge from No. 37 Oklahoma (11-4) in a 1:00 p.m. match from TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center and Bartzen Varsity Courts. The contest with the Sooners is Louisiana's first against a ranked team since the debut of the ITA's team rankings back on Feb. 23.
A LOOK AT LOUISIANA
Ranked inside the Top 40 of the ITA rankings for the fourth consecutive week, Louisiana seeks to continue its impressive winning streak which dates back to Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts. The team's 14-1 record is the program's best start in the 2000s era.
Louisiana is coming off a 6-1 win over UTRGV last weekend which was the team's fourth straight decisive win by a three-plus point margin since claiming the H-E-B Tournament of Champions back on Feb. 19. The squad has excelled in close calls, sporting a 3-0 record in matches decided by a 4-3 count which includes wins over Rice, ETSU and UTSA.
The Ragin' Cajuns have captured the doubles point the last four outings and sport a 25-14 mark in doubles action. The team has been even more impressive in singles play, having accumulated a 59-22 record to date.
Entering the weekend, Louisiana has three players with more than 10 dual-match singles wins under their belts this season: Oriol Fillat Gimenez (13-1), Vasil Dimitrov (12-3) and Calin Postea (11-2). Fillat Gimenez carries an impressive 12-game winning streak at No. 3 singles.
On the doubles side, the pairing of Karlo Kajin and Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez has produced an 9-4 record on Court 1 to fuel Louisiana's success. The No. 3 doubles pairing of Kacper Dworak and Postea have stepped up their game as of late, winning four straight to improve to 7-4 and captured an exhilarating 8-6 come-from-behind tiebreaker win to secure the doubles point for the Ragin' Cajuns in the Sun Belt Conference opener vs. Coastal Carolina on March 5 at Cajun Courts.
THE OPPOSITION
UT Arlington looks to carry over momentum from a week ago that saw wins over Boston College, Rice and Lamar. Alan Sau Franco leads the Mavericks with 16 wins overall, while Maks Lukman is leading UTA in dual matches with 11 wins on the year. Reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Miguel Cabrera has a career-high 15 wins on the season.Â
Oklahoma is on a three-match losing streak after being dealt losses by nationally ranked Baylor, Arizona and Tulsa. The Sooners are a dominant 29-6 in doubles play led by the No. 1 pairing of Welsh Hotard and Alex Martinez and the No. 3 pairing of Mason Beiler and Nathan Han, both groups standing at 11-2 in dual match play. Beiler, currently 9-3 at No. 1 singles and ranked No. 45 nationally, owns 63 career victories both fall and spring combined.Â
ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY
The matchup with OU is Louisiana's second against a Power 5 foe in the spring 2022 dual match season. The Ragin' Cajuns claimed a 4-1 victory over Texas Tech in Lubbock on Feb. 11.
