Ragin' Cajuns step out of conference play, seek to continue win streak
LAFAYETTE -Â The No. 38 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team is scheduled for a Friday (March 11) afternoon matchup with UTRGVÂ at Cajuns Courts, with match time set for 3:00 p.m.
The Ragin' Cajuns (13-1, 1-0 SBC) have a scheduled weekend off from Sun Belt Conference play. Friday's match with the Vaqueros (1-9) is the final tuneup before the remainder of the SBC schedule kicks in - the contest at UT Arlington on March 18 starts a string of five consecutive conference matches through April 3.
Louisiana seeks to continue its impressive winning streak, which presently stands at 13 straight matches won dating back to Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts. The team's 13-1 record is the program's best start in the 2000s era.
Last weekend the Ragin' Cajuns returned home to Cajun Courts for the first time since January, carrying the momentum from an exciting doubles play finish into singles play and a 5-2 win over Coastal Carolina in the SBC opener on Saturday, March 5. The next afternoon the squad made a short trip to New Orleans and coasted by the host-Privateers by a 6-1 count to keep the win streak intact.
Friday's match is the first of four remaining opportunities for the Acadiana tennis community to watch the team compete at Cajun Courts. Following the UTRGV match, the Ragin' Cajuns are home the weekend of March 25-27 hosting Georgia Southern and Georgia State and wrap up the home slate on April 7 vs. Florida Atlantic.
Entering Friday's outing, Louisiana has three players with more than 10 dual-match singles wins under their belts this season: Oriol Fillat Gimenez (12-1), Vasil Dimitrov (11-3) and Calin Postea (10-2). The trio all carry personal win streaks into the meeting with the Vaqueros led by Fillat Gimenez who has claimed his last 11 decisions. With wins on Sunday at UNO, Dimitrov won his sixth straight outing and Postea captured his fourth straight win.
On the doubles side, the pairing of Karlo Kajin and Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez has produced an 8-4 record on Court 1 to fuel Louisiana's success. Postea, the regining SBC Player of the Week, and his doubles partner Kacper Dworak have emerged as strong finishers for the Ragin' Cajuns in doubles action, most recently clinching the point in both matches last weekend highlighted by rallying from a 6-2 deficit in the tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to post an 8-6 win that secured the point in the Coastal Carolina match.
The Vaqueros haven't been successful much this spring, but have faced several ranked teams which makes the team's record deceiving. Veterans junior Misha Kvantaliani (4-4) and senior Carlo Izurieta (4-3) have been as dependable as can be at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respctively.Â
Live stats will be available for the match with UTRGV and can be accessed through CajunStats.com or the link on the men's tennis schedule page at RaginCajuns.com.
The UTRGV match is Louisiana's lone contest for the week. The team isn't scheduled to return to play until Friday, March 18 at UT Arlington when SBC play resumes.
