Ortego, Weber Lead Louisiana On Day One in Vegas

Ragin' Cajuns to be paired with Kentucky, A-State in second round
HENDERSON, Nev. – The freshman tandem of Eli Ortego and Matt Weber each recorded a first-round score of 1-over-par 73 to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team during the opening round of the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate on Monday at the Reflection Bay Golf Club.

Louisiana, playing in its second event of the spring, posted a team score of 7-over 295 to finish in 13th place in the field.

The second round of the 54-hole event will begin at 9:30 a.m. CT. Louisiana, which will be paired with Kentucky and Arkansas State in the second round, will start from the No. 1 tee at 10:20 a.m CT.

Ortego, a former Ascension Episcopal School product, recorded a 1-under 35 on the front nine which was highlighted by consecutive birdies at hole No. 3 and 4. Weber, a St. Thomas More product, shot an identical 1-under-35 on the front nine with birdies at No. 2 and 6 before adding a birdie at No. 12.

Senior Peter Hinnant recorded four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the front nine before finishing at 2-over-par 74 for Louisiana with fellow seniors Justin Caldwell posting a 3-over 75 and Hunter Hammett a 6-over 78.

St. Mary's (Calif.) posted a team score of 12-under 276 to finish five shots ahead of Little Rock and West Virginia after the opening day. UAB (286) and Kansas City (287) rounded out the top-5 in the field with Oregon State (288), Utah (288), Kentucky (288), Michigan (290) and host Coastal Carolina (290) finishing 6-10.

Mikey Slesinski of St. Mary's recorded an 8-under 64 to claim the first-day lead and finish one stroke ahead of West Virginia's Mark Goetz.
