Freshman posts career-low 211 in 54-hole event to lead Ragin' Cajuns in spring opener

MOBILE, Ala. – Freshman Eli Ortego capped off an impressive start to his spring portion of the 2021-22 season as he recorded his second straight round of 2-under-par 70 as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

Louisiana posted a 54-hole team score of 880 to finish 12th overall in its first of six spring events leading up to the Sun Belt Conference Championships in April. Florida State claimed its fourth overall title in the event, and first since 2020, after blistering the course in the final round with a 15-under-273 to finish at 848 for the tournament and two strokes ahead of first-day leader UAB.

Ortego, who finished sixth overall in the 80-man field, recorded a record-low finish for a 54-hole event at 5-under-211 (71-70-70) as he produced all three rounds of below par for the first time in his career. The former Ascension Episcopal School product posted an average of 4.33 on par-5 holes to tie for the lowest average in the 80-man field.

He collected eight birdies in the 54-hole event with a pair of eagles during Monday's opening two rounds while lowering his season scoring average to 72.44.

Peter Hinnant posted a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to finish tied for 23rd (69-74-73-216) for Louisiana with Matt Weber capping off the second round with a career-low round (1-under-71) and finishing at 226. (76-71-79).

Jose Dibildox posted his best round of the event in the final round (1-over 73) to finish at 230 while Hudson Dubinski finished at 237.

First-day leader Nick Robillard of UAB claimed medalist honors after recording a final round score of 5-under 67 and finishing at 11-under 205 – three strokes ahead of runner-up Chris Vandette of Kent State.
