Timely Scores, Late Comeback Pushes App State Past Louisiana Volleyball

11/11/2022 8:45:00 PM | Volleyball

Ragin’ Cajuns seek to bounce back, and build momentum for postseason, in Saturday’s rematch

BOONE, N.C. – With timely scores in the first set, an early scoring run in the second set and a comeback in the final set, the host-App State Mountaineers collected a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 26-24) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team on Friday, November 11 at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina.

App State (17-9, 10-5 Sun Belt) used an efficient .298 hitting percentage and a 48-36 advantage in kills to knock off Louisiana (14-10, 8-7 Sun Belt) in the opener of the two-match series in Boone. The Mountaineers crisp attack prevented the Ragin' Cajuns from leading by no more than four points throughout the contest.

A key non-reversal of a challenge in Set 1 spurned momentum for the Mountaineers who went up by three points instead of a one-point differential and expanded the lead to 12-7. The Ragin' Cajuns stormed back to create a one-score situation at 16-15 after Lauryn Hill scored a kill and an ace.

App State got the critical side out, though, to stay ahead until Paige Guidry's ace gave UL a 21-20 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns lead was short-lived as the timely answers showed up once again for App State, beginning with back-to-back kills from Sarah Missroon and McCall Denny for a 22-21 lead.

The Mountaineers were on the fast track to a commanding 2-0 match lead after a 7-0 scoring run broke a 2-all deadlock in Set 2. Louisiana chipped away at the deficit after a kill from Hill began a four-point spurt that closed the deficit to 13-9.

The theme of timely scores continued as App State got a pair of critical kills on back-to-back rallies to begin to extend the lead back out at 16-10. The Ragin' Cajuns didn't back down closing back within four points later on at 23-19 following a kill from Kara Barnes out of a Mountaineers timeout.

With a 7-0 run, capped off by back-to-back aces from Guidry, Louisiana forged ahead 14-12 in Set 3 and later gained further separation when kills from Cami Hicks and Celeste Darling followed by a block from the duo stretched the lead to 18-14.

App State responded with a 7-3 run to even the score out and later spoiled the Ragin' Cajuns bid to extend the match when a Sam Bickley ace gave the hosts the upper hand, at 24-23, prior to extra points beginning.

The Mountaineers topped the Ragin' Cajuns for the fourth straight time in an SBC regular season contest and increased its series advantage in Boone to 5-1.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Coco Gillett turned in a team-leading 10 kills and match-high 10 digs as she recorded a double-double for the fifth consecutive match (dates back to ULM series).

Louisiana's middles were highly efficient on the attack, as Barnes scored seven kills off 15 swings and a .400 hitting percentage while Hicks contributed six kills off only 10 swings and a .500 percentage.

Hicks and Darling had a hand in multiple blocks as they led the way with four and two blocks, respectively.

Setter Siena DeCambra put away two kills on three attempts in addition to her team-leading 21 assists. She also contributed eight digs and posted one block.

Guidry's three aces marked her career-high total for a single match and was part of a busy night that saw her also round up six digs and pass out two assists.
