Ragin’ Cajuns get another shot at App State; meeting in first round of next week’s Sun Belt Tournament
BOONE, N.C. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team was unable to hold on to its early match advantage as leads slipped away in the final three sets resulting in App State claiming a 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20) win in the regular season finale for both squads on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, North Carolina.
It was an evenly played match as the Mountaineers (18-9, 11-5 Sun Belt) held a slim 48-47 edge in kills and the Ragin' Cajuns (14-11, 8-8 Sun Belt) had a slight 48-45 edge in digs. There were 34 tied scores, 10 in each of the final two sets, and 16 lead changes and it was 15-14 at every media timeout over the course of the contest.
App State used its efficiency to make the difference for the second straight day, committing five fewer errors than Louisiana to hold a .222-.171 advantage in hitting percentage.
The Ragin' Cajuns posted three blocks during a 6-2 surge that put the visitors ahead 15-14 by the media timeout in the first set. Louisiana managed to stay ahead even after the Mountaineers forged a 21-all tie, as Lauryn Hill provided a tiebreaking kill, Siena DeCambra served an ace and Coco Gillett found the floor to extend the lead to 24-21.
The Mountaineers evened the match in Set 2, recovering from an early 5-2 deficit. A Lulu Ambrose kill put App State up 15-14 at the media timeout, then the hosts claimed five of the next six rallies to build separation at 20-15.
There were six ties early in the race for the match lead before Louisiana made its move. A Cami Hicks kill broke the stalemate and later it was an ace from the Ragin' Cajuns middle blocker that extended the lead to 13-9.
Celeste Darling powered through the block for an 18-15 edge, however the momentum quickly swung in the Mountaineers favor as the hosts rolled off a 6-0 run to jump ahead. Darling and Hicks combined for a block to pull Louisiana even again at 21-all, but back-to-back miscues (service and attack error) allowed the hosts to recapture the lead for good.
The fourth set hung in the balance and was evened at 17-all after a Kara Barnes block solo. Louisiana appeared to have the lead on the ensuing rally, but instead a would-be dump kill from Reka Kotorman was not to be after the Ragin' Cajuns where whistled for a violation.
App State capitalized on the controversial call getting a block on the next rally to maintain the lead and rode the momentum swing to the final whistle.
The Mountaineers completed the series sweep and bested the Ragin' Cajuns in a Sun Belt regular season match for the fifth straight time dating back to 2018.
