GSU Scores Twice In Second Half To Pull Away From Louisiana, 3-1

Louisiana faces Alcorn State in non-conference match on Sunday
LAFAYETTE – Brooklynn Fugel scored a pair of goals while Georgia State scored twice in the second half to defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team, 3-1, in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams on Thursday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
Jimena Cabrero broke a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute as GSU (6-2-1, 1-0-0 SBC) scored its goals after Louisiana (2-6-0, 0-1-0 SBC) took a 1-0 lead on Ruthny Mathurin's first career goal in the eighth minute.
Louisiana took the lead after Lucy Ortiz intercepted a ball near midfield, found Karleen Bedre, whose thru pass down the left side was collected by Mathurin, who sent a well-place left-footed shot past GSU starting goalkeeper Maria Subies into the upper right corner of the net.
Fugel would score the equalizer for the Panthers midway through the 19th minute after deflecting a shot from Maddie Johnston past Louisiana goalkeeper Libby Harper and into the lower left corner of the net.
Cabrero recorded the game-winner for GSU in the 60th minute after splitting a pair of Louisiana defenders inside the 18-yard box and beating Harper to the lower left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Fugel added an insurance goal for the Panthers early in the 87th minute after taking a pass from Bree Barley and scoring past Harper.
Louisiana held a 13-11 advantage in shots with seven attempts placed on-goal. Alex Folchert and Tatum Beck took a team-high two shots for Louisiana while Bedre, Hailey Hoffmann and Laura Hansen each placed shots on-goal.
Jaddah Foos earned the victory in relief for GSU, replacing an injured Subies in the 44th minute and stopping a pair of shots. Subies stopped four shots for the Panthers while Lexie Knox added an assist.
Louisiana will return to action on Sunday when it travels to face Alcorn State in a non-conference match in Lorman, Miss. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
