Ragin' Cajuns open SBC play on Sunday at Texas State
LAFAYETTE – Sophia Smith poked in a deflection off an attempted shot in the 85th minute and Stephen F. Austin overcame a 15-4 disadvantage in shot attempts to claim a 1-0 victory over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Soccer team on Sunday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
Madeline Talbot stopped seven shots as SFA (2-0-1) was outshot 11-3 in the second half and overcame an offside penalty by Louisiana (2-1) in the 88th minute that denied a potential game-tying goal by Gwen Mummert.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first half as the teams combined for five shots. The Ragin' Cajuns had opportunities in the match's opening 20 minutes as Lizzie Mayfield and Mummert had shots blocked while Talbot stopped a pair of attempts by Mayfield.
SFA had its first scoring opportunity stopped when Louisiana's Jordan Higgins stopped an attempt by Colleen Feagins in the 29th minute.
Louisiana attempted three shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Talbot stopped a pair of attempts by Rachel Sutter while an attempt by freshman Abby Nowak sailed right of the goal. The Ragin' Cajuns added a pair of close-range attempts in the 79th minute as Mummert's attempt on-goal was knocked away by a SFA defender before Hailey Hoffmann's attempt on a follow was blocked.
After a corner by the Lumberjacks, Carli Arthurs attempted a shot from inside the 18-yard box that deflected off Higgins' hands and caromed to Smith, who tapped in a wide-open goal to give SFA the lead.
Talbot stopped an attempt by Mayfield from just outside the 18-yard box before Louisiana was called for offsides just over a minute later, denying Mummert's game-tying blast in the 88th minute.
Mayfield and Sutter combined for nine of Louisiana's 15 attempts and seven of the Ragin' Cajuns eight shots on-goal. Higgins recorded two saves for Louisiana while the Ragin' Cajuns held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Louisiana will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 20) when it opens Sun Belt Conference play at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the contest scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+.
