Throwback Thursday: Louisiana Hosts UTA at E.K. Long

Thursday will be the Ragin’ Cajuns’ first competitive game at E.K. Long since March 26, 2016
LAFAYETTE – With two games remaining and tournament seeding on the line, Louisiana prepares for a big test on Thursday evening when it welcomes third-ranked UTA. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CST.
The Ragin' Cajuns will host the Lady Mavs at Historic Earl K. Long Gymnasium, Louisiana's first competitive game in the venue since March 26, 2016, when it defeated Weber State, 87-85, in double overtime in the WBI Championship Game. Since the 2013 season, Louisiana is 9-0 in games played at E.K. Long, including a 3-0 mark in regular seasons games.
There is still a lot on the line in regards to the Sun Belt standings entering the final two regular season games. Louisiana, which is currently fifth in the league, could still find itself hosting the first two rounds of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament with two wins and help from around the conference.
In its most recent outing, Louisiana dropped a hard-fought battle to top-ranked Coastal Carolina, 83-74. Four different players scored in double figures for Louisiana in the loss behind 19 points from Brandi Williams. Jomyra Mathis also had a strong performance, recording her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
Junior Ty'Reona Doucet remains the team's leading scorer (12.6 ppg) and rebounder (7.4 rpg) entering the final weekend, while Williams leads all Ragin' Cajun scorers at home, averaging 10.5 points per contest in Lafayette.
UTA (18-10, 12-4 SBC), which has locked up the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and is riding a five-game winning streak ahead of Thursday's game. In its last outing on Saturday afternoon, UTA ran past Georgia Southern by a final score of 101-73, its first 100+-point performance of the season.
Four different Lady Mavs scored in double figures, three of which score 20 or more points. Claire Chastain led that foursome with 22 points in the win. On the year, Marie Benson has been stellar for the Lady Mavs, leading the team in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg). Chastain is also averaging in double figures this season, contributing 10.8 points per game.
Louisiana and UTA will be meeting for the 26th time dating back to 1979 and the first time this season when the two programs face off on Thursday evening at Historic Earl K. Long Gymnasium. Louisiana leads the all-time series, 14-11, and owns a 7-5 record against UTA in Lafayette. Under head coach Garry Brodhead, Louisiana is 5-9 against UTA and owns a 2-4 record against the Lady Mavs in Lafayette.
