Todd Lott’s two-hit night extended the junior’s hitting streak to 14 games.
Friday's defeat was just the third time that the Ragin' Cajuns (15-17, 4-6) suffered a loss when outhitting their opponent (11-3).
Senior Orynn Veillon was lights out on Friday, producing a perfect outing at the plate (4-for-4) for the first time in his career with two RBI and two runs scored. He also pitched the final 2.0 innings of the game for Louisiana, allowing a hit and a run with four punch outs.
Todd Lott extended his hitting streak to 14 games after a 2-for-5 outing that included a laser shot over the left-field wall. Lott's streak is the tied for the longest of the season after Hayden Cantrelle posted a 14-game streak earlier in the season. The only other Ragin' Cajun to post multiple hits was Tremaine Spears, who finished the night 2-for-4.
Right-handed Grant Cox went 5.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out a career-best five batters. Jacob Schultz took his first loss of the season, finishing the game after 1.0 inning pitched and allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on four hits.
After Arkansas State (20-11, 8-2) scored the first six runs of the game, Louisiana found some offense in the bottom of the fourth when a Veillon double and a Kole McKinnon single cut the lead to 6-3.
Louisiana had a golden opportunity to swing the momentum back in its favor in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and Daniel Lahare at the plate, but it was unable to do so. The missed chance proved to be costly as Arkansas State put up a five spot in the top of the seventh to push its lead out to 11-3.
Lott stole two runs back in the bottom of the seventh with his home run and Kasuls drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to cut into the lead at 11-6, but a run in the ninth from the Red Wolves sealed the 12-6 victory for the visitors.
The two teams return to action in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch in Game One is slated for 4 p.m., with Game Two beginning approximately 45 minutes later. Both contests will be streamed live on RaginCajuns.com/Watch.
