Louisiana shoots 7-under on back nine to stay in contention for match play spot
MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – Freshman Charlie Flynn fired a 5-under par 66 and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team took advantage of a surge on the back nine to move up two spots after the second round of the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championships on Monday at the Raven Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
The final round on the par-71, 6,807-yard course begins at 7:30 a.m. Louisiana, which carded a team score of 4-under 280, moved up two spots in the standings to a ninth-place tie with Troy heading into the final round.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who are 10 strokes behind fourth-place Little Rock in the team standings, will tee off with ULM and Georgia State from the No. 10 tee beginning at 8:15 a.m. The top four teams in stroke play will advance to match play on Wednesday with the winner receiving the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Live results of the final round will be available at GolfStat.com, with live video from holes 1, 9, 10 and 18, being broadcast live on ESPN+.
"Very proud of the grit and fight the guys showed today, especially on our last six holes making 11 birdies and posting an under-par round," head coach Theo Sliman said. "This team is not out of making it to match play, we're going to need a special round tomorrow and we believe that they certainly can put something together as a collective group.
"This course can bite you very quickly if you lose focus, anything will be possible as we expect this leaderboard to tighten up tomorrow afternoon."
Jack Tolson and Peter Hinnant each posted rounds of 1-under 70 as Louisiana finished 7-under par on the back nine. Flynn, Hinnant and Micah Goulas each at 2-under 34 through their final nine holes as the Ragin' Cajuns recorded 14 of their 22 birdies in the round after the turn.
Flynn, who opened the tournament with a 7-over 78 on Monday, shot 3-under 32 on the front nine before picking up four birdies to counter a pair of bogeys on the back in recording his lowest round of the season.
"Very proud of Charlie and happy for him," said Sliman, "he played with poise and determination and maybe even a little redemption after his opening poor play. But that is what good players do and fully expect him to play the final round with even more determination."
Tolson and Hinnant each posted five birdies on the day with Hinnant going bogey-free on the back nine. Goulas, who fired a 5-over-par 40 on the front nine, recorded all four of his birdies on the back nine, including three straight to end the day and finish at 3-over 74.
Freshman Hudson Dubinski rebounded from a 4-over 39 on the front nine to go bogey-free on the back, recording his lone birdie of the day on the par-4, 298-yard No. 15.
Arkansas State fired a team score of 10-under 274 to finish at 555 after two rounds and three strokes ahead of first-day leader Coastal Carolina (558) and No. 28-ranked Arkansas State. Little Rock (562) finished the second round in fourth place with UT Arlington (563), South Alabama (567), ULM (567), Georgia State (568) and Louisiana (572) following.
First-round leader Luka Naglic of Arkansas State maintained his lead in stroke play after recording a 4-under 67 to finish at 133 overall, two shots in front of teammate Zan Luka Stirn and South Alabama's Rasmus Karlsson.
Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk, ranked No. 18 nationally, overcame a 4-over 75 in the first round to shoot a 10-under 61 and finish three shots back at 136.
