The Ragin’ Cajuns are now 6-2 on the year when hitting two or more homers
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana put its power on display on Sunday afternoon, sending three balls sailing over the outfield fence during its series-clinching 4-1 victory over South Alabama at Russo Park.
Â
It was the fourth time this season that the Ragin' Cajuns (19-20, 8-7) have hit three or more homers in a game and the first time since it hit four against Arkansas State on April 6. Louisiana is now 6-2 in games when hitting two or more long balls.
Â
Junior Todd Lott was responsible for one of those jacks and added an RBI single as part of a 2-for-4 outing, while Kole McKinnon and Orynn Veillon added a solo shot each during the home run parade. Sophomore Hayden Cantrelle also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns got exactly what they needed on the mound, with Jack Burk (1-0) claiming his first victory of the season after matching his career high with seven strikeouts and allowing just one run on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Â
Burk was relieved by Jacob Schultz, who went 3.0 innings without allowing a run and gave up just three hits with three strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.
Â
Similar to the first two games of the series, South Alabama (15-20, 5-10) struck first in the second inning when it scored the ballgame's opening run on a sacrifice fly. That run was matched in the bottom of the third when Lott hit his fourth homer of the season to knot the game up at one run apiece.
Â
Back-to-back dingers in the fourth off the bats Veillon and McKinnon jumped Louisiana into the lead at 3-1, with both smacking their respective shots over the left-field wall.
Â
Lott came back up in the seventh and tacked on an insurance run, singling up the middle to score Cantrelle to produce what was ultimately the final score of 4-1.
Â
Louisiana faces a tall order on Tuesday night in its next contest when its travels to Metairie, Louisiana, for neutral-site matchup with No. 9 Louisiana State. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. Fans interested in attending the game can get more information here.
