Louisiana Welcomes Appalachian State for Sun Belt Home Opener

The Ragin’ Cajuns split a pair of midweek contests leading into the weekend series
LAFAYETTE – After splitting a pair of in-state midweek contests, the Louisiana baseball team resumes Sun Belt play this weekend, March 22-24, when it welcomes Appalachian State to Russo Park for its league home opener.

Game times are set for 6:30 p.m., on Friday and 2 p.m., on Saturday, while Sunday's finale is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. first pitch. Game One of the series will be broadcast on ESPN+, with the final two games airing on RaginCajuns.com/Watch.

The Ragin' Cajuns (10-12, 2-1) won its opening conference series with two wins on the road at Little Rock last weekend and earned a victory over Northwestern State (8-3) on Tuesday before falling to Tulane, 7-3, on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Hayden Cantrelle continued his historic run on Tuesday, becoming the fourth player in program history to hit for the cycle in Louisiana's game with Northwestern State. He followed that performance up with a solo home run at Tulane, extending his hitting streak to 10 and his on-base streak to 22 games.

The team's offense has also continued to receive a spark from Hunter Kasuls (.316) Brennan Breaux (.306), who have combined for 51 hits and 23 RBI through 22 games this year.

Sophomore right hander Jacob Schultz (0-0) will get the nod on Friday night as Gunner Leger will miss the game due to scheduled rest. Schultz has given up just four earned runs this season in 31.0 innings pitched and boasts a 1.16 ERA with 26 strikeouts.

Louisiana's starter for Saturday and Sunday is currently TBA.

Appalachian State (8-11, 1-2) enters the weekend coming off a 13-0 win over North Carolina Central after losing its opening series of league play to Georgia State. Luke Drumheller leads the Mountaineers at the plate, hitting .413 (26-for-63) with nine doubles and a team-leading 20 RBI.

The Mountaineers will start Will Sprinkle on the hill on Friday (1-3) and Tyler Tuthill (4-1) on Saturday, while their Sunday starter is listed as TBA.

Louisiana and Appalachian State will play for the 13th time when they take the diamond on Friday night, with the Ragin' Cajuns leading the all-time series, 8-4. After earning a series sweep in Boone last season, Louisiana has taken the last four meetings between the two teams.
