LAFAYETTE – Playing in its first match since Feb. 8, Louisiana Women's Tennis (4-3) dropped a closely contested match at Cajun Courts to Sam Houston State (4-3), 4-2, in a Sunday afternoon match that was contested to the very end.
Junior Marina Rodriguez Garcia snagged herself a win in singles, while in doubles the pairing of Garcia and fellow junior Clara Mantaux along with the Louisiana duo of sophomores Floriane Picaut and Dana Radovanovic each snagged wins for Louisiana.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana took the doubles point, but it was not easily earned by the Ragin' Cajuns with all three matches being played out before Louisiana would lock down the 1-0 lead heading into singles. At No. 3, Garcia and Mantaux took down the Sam Houston State pairing of K DeLaLuz Montalvo and Petra Kaszas, 6-4, to get Louisiana off to a good start.
Louisiana dropped the match at No. 1, tying the doubles at 1-1, but at No. 2 a comeback was underway, and it would lead to Louisiana taking the point. That comeback was locked up by Picaut and Radovanovic who began the match losing the first few points before storming back against Sahaja Yamalapalli and Isidora Zivkovic to take the match 6-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): The singles portion of the match began with Garcia taking her match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 over Montalvo at No. 3. Sam Houston State then took the match at No. 2 when Picaut fell, 6-3, 6-0, to Zivkovic.
At No. 4, Mantaux would fall to Lusine Chobanyan, 6-4, 7-6(1), but not without putting a fight in the second set as the junior Frenchwoman battled through a tough match. Freshman Ai Noa Fabre, playing No. 5, would drop her match next, but again she did not go quietly, after dropping the first set in a tiebreaker that went past seven points, Fabre took the second set.
It set up a third set showdown that Fabre would drop, losing 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-2, to Roos Gerritsen, but Fabre had shown her fight right to the end. At No. 1 singles, the match would be decided but freshman Hoda Habib, much like the rest of the Ragin' Cajuns, showed great fight despite losing the match.
Facing Yamalapalli, Habib started the match by dropping the first set, but she came roaring back in the second set to force a deciding third set. Habib could not keep up the momentum she had earned in the second set, falling in the third set to lose the match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2, and the loss meant that Sam Houston State locked up the 4-2 win.
UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana remains at Cajun Courts with a Feb. 28 doubleheader against Prairie View A&M, with the first match set to start at 10 a.m. and the second scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
