Louisiana falls to 0-2 in extra-inning contests this season
RUSTON, La. – Louisiana had multiple chances to break open the game on Wednesday night, but it was Louisiana Tech who left victorious after a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning saw the Bulldogs defeat the Ragin' Cajuns, 3-2, at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
Â
Despite out-hitting the Bulldogs, 10-5, the Ragin' Cajuns struck out 14 times in the ballgame and left eight runners on base, including a bases-loaded situation in the top of the seventh.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (1-3) are now 0-2 in extra-inning games this year, both of which lasted just 10 innings.
Â
Senior Hunter Kasuls was solid offensively on Wednesday, going 3-for-5 at the plate including a monster shot to right field, his first homer of the year and the ninth of his career. Gavin Bourgeois produced a multi-hit night of his own off the bench, batting 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Â
In his first career start, sophomore Jacob Schultz produced a stellar outing with 5.0 innings pitched, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters. Michael Leaumont, who was credited with the loss, went 3.1 innings of one-hit, one-run ball with five strikeouts.
Â
Louisiana Tech's (4-0) Jonathan Fincher was credited with the win, while the Bulldogs' offensive was paced by Mason Robinson, who went 2-for-4 and hit the game-winning RBI.
Â
Kasuls got the Ragin' Cajuns on the scoreboard first, hammering a ball deep over the right-field wall on a 3-2 count to put Louisiana ahead, 1-0, in the top of the fourth inning.
Â
Two innings later, Louisiana Tech took advantage of a bases-loaded in the bottom half of the sixth when Steele Netterville hit a single through the left side to plate two runs and give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Â
Three consecutive singles loaded the bases with one out in the top part of the next inning for Louisiana, but a smoked ball by Daniel Lahare to left field was caught in spectacular fashion to neutralize a bases-loaded threat.
Â
After giving up a walk and a single which advanced both runners to second and third in the top of the ninth, Bourgeois came through to tie the game at 2-2 with a single up the middle. However, the Ragin' Cajuns were unable to score two runners who were in scoring position to give the Bulldogs life.
Â
The missed chances in the ninth came back to haunt the Ragin' Cajuns late in the 10th inning when Robinson hit a single to score Parker Bates and give the Bulldogs the 3-2 walk-off win.
Â
Louisiana continues its road swing this weekend, February 22-24, when it travels to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston State. Friday's series opener is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
