Mountaineers use defense to reverse course in the deciding fifth set
BOONE, N.C. – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball had its opportunity to split the first Sun Belt Conference road trip of the season slip away on Sunday as Appalachian State recovered to claim a 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 15-9) decision at the Holmes Center.
The Ragin' Cajuns' recipe for success in the building a 2-0 match, limiting attack errors, was copied by the Mountaineers in their rally. After committing more miscues in the first two sets, with 15 compared to Louisiana's six, App State lowered its amount the final three frames (12) while the visitors' increased (19).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana (9-9, 1-3 Sun Belt) was the more proficient squad in the first two sets, hitting above .300 and coming out ahead in both stanzas.
Hali Wisnoskie and Kelsey Bennett took turns scoring back-to-back kills as Louisiana gained separation and opened an 18-14 lead in the opening set. After the Mountaineers (12-4, 4-0 Sun Belt) cut the lead to 23-22, Louisiana answered with a Hanna Rovira kill and Nia Antoine block to capture the set.
The Ragin' Cajuns fell behind 14-10 in the second set, but wouldn't let the hosts pull away. Louisiana fought back to pull ahead 24-23, then took the lead for good after a Rovira kill on the first rally of extra points.
After Appalachian State forced the winner-take-all frame, Louisiana appeared to be in control after three straight kills – off swings from Antoine and Rovira – opened a 6-2 advantage. However, six attack errors the rest of the way provided the boost the Mountaineers needed to pull of another comeback.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Wisnoskie turned in her Sun Belt play season-best total with 16 kills. Antoine and Dree'Ana Abram joined her in double figures with 12 apiece, both needing no more than 25 swings to reach their output.
Abram, who reached double digits for the third time in four SBC outings, paced the Ragin' Cajuns efforts with nine kills over the first two sets.
Libero Sydney Davis recorded a season-high of 25 digs. Davis hit the 20-dig mark during both outings of the weekend trip (22 at Coastal Carolina).
Antoine led the blocking efforts with four (3 BS, 1 BA). Setters Milayne Danna (28) and Avery Breaux (22) both handed out 20-plus assists.
SET POINTS
Louisiana returns to Earl K. Long Gym and meets Troy on Friday, Oct. 5 and South Alabama on Saturday, Oct. 6. The first serve of both matches is set for 6:30 p.m.
