Louisiana overcomes 12-4 deficit in pivotal second set to secure fourth consecutive victory
MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball erased an eight-point deficit in the second set to begin climbing out of an early match deficit and spark a four-set victory over South Alabama on Friday at Jaguar Gym in Mobile, Alabama, extending its season-best winning streak to four matches.
The Ragin' Cajuns recovered from a 12-4 hole to claim the momentum-changing frame, then captured the next two sets for a 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18 victory and their first win in Mobile since 2017.
Louisiana (10-10, 5-2 SBC) maintained its hold on third place in the Sun Belt's West Division and remained within striking distance of first place.
UL controlled the service line with nine aces, including five from Ryleigh Garis and three from Rhyan Miciotto. The Cajuns produced a 58-49 advantage in kills and hit .242, topping .200 for the third consecutive match.
The Ragin' Cajuns also held a 64-54 edge in digs while matching the Jaguars' nine blocks.
Lolo Lambert scored a match-high 17 kills on .286 hitting and added a match-high tying 16 digs. Sarah Schnell supplied 12 kills, surpassing 200 in a season for the first time in her collegiate career, while Grace Sweeney delivered 10 kills on .409 hitting with 13 digs.
Kennedy Gustafson collected 15 digs to eclipse 300 for the second consecutive season, increasing her season total to 312. Miciotto distributed 24 assists, and Garis paired 18 assists with 10 digs. Lindsey Henry and Emily Williams contributed four blocks apiece.
Sarah Gooch led USA (7-12, 2-5 SBC) with 14 kills, while Dalayla Blackwell added 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After South Alabama pulled away from a 21-all tie to take the opener, Louisiana faced an even steeper challenge in the second set.
Sweeney's kill began the recovery from 12-4, and a six-point run featuring three Lambert kills trimmed a 13-6 deficit to 13-12. Sweeney later drew UL even at 16-all, then supplied four kills during a five-point surge that turned a 17-16 deficit into a 21-17 lead.
Sweeney finished the set with seven kills, helping the Ragin' Cajuns outscore the Jaguars 21-9 after USA built its early eight-point advantage. Miciotto's kill completed the comeback and squared the match.
Louisiana prevailed through 12 ties in the third set to leap into the match lead, scoring four of the final five points after a 21-all deadlock. Schnell registered five of the team's 17 kills in the frame.
UL never trailed in the fourth, opening a 5-1 lead and stretching the margin to 23-13. Five aces and .306 hitting powered the finish, with Lambert delivering six kills, including the match-winner.
