Cajuns Baseball Defeats No. 19 LSU 3-1 To Complete Season Sweep

3/27/2018 11:03:00 PM | Baseball

METAIRIE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team defeated No. 19 LSU 3-1 at the Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic on Tuesday night at the Shrine on Airline to complete the season sweep.

The season sweep of the Tigers (16-10) marks the first time the Ragin' Cajuns (11-13) have claimed two wins against LSU in the same year since 2002. The win is the fourth of the season for Louisiana against a ranked opponent.

Junior Hogan Harris picked up his first victory of the season limiting the Tigers to one unearned run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts in four innings of work. Senior Logan Stoelke registered his sixth save of the year in the game tossing a scoreless ninth inning with a strikeout.

LSU starter AJ Labas was handed the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

LEADING THE CAJUNS

Senior Kennon Fontenot drove in a game-high two runs and had a double for the Cajuns who were outhit 10-6 on the night. Junior Gavin Bourgeois reached base twice in the contest with a double and scored two runs, while freshman Hayden Cantrelle increased his hit streak to a season-best eight games going 1-for-3 with a walk.

On the mound, freshmen left-handers Austin Perrin and Brock Batty combined to toss four scoreless innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Louisiana grabbed an early lead in the top of the first inning when Fontenot sent an RBI double down the left field line to plate Daniel Lahare. Bourgeois added to the advantage scoring on an Labas wild pitch to make the score 2-0.

The Cajuns added to their lead in the top of the third when Bourgeois came home to score on a ground ball hit to shortstop by Fontenot.

LSU cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Nick Coomes came around to score on a throwing error by Harris.

The Tigers best threat came in the bottom of the ninth putting two on with one out, but Stoelke got Beau Jordan and Antoine Duplantis to ground out to end the contest.

UP NEXT

Louisiana returns to Sun Belt Conference play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with a three-game series at Arkansas State. The Cajuns and Red Wolves meet on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the series finale at Tomlinson Stadium.
