Cajuns Come Up With Big Win Over Texas State, 62-43

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team jumped out to a fast start and didn't look back on the way to defeating Texas State 62-43 on Thursday at the Cajundome.
Louisiana (17-9, 11-6 SBC) used 20 points from Jaylyn Gordon while Nekia Jones added 12 points to help the Cajuns secure an important Sun Belt Conference win.
Texas State (16-12, 11-6 SBC) is now tied with Louisiana in fourth place in the Sun Belt standings with one game remaining in the regular season for each team.
If Louisiana defeats UTA on Saturday and Troy loses to league-leader Little Rock, Louisiana will secure the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament regardless of what Texas State does at ULM.
The Cajuns stormed out to a 9-0 lead when Gordon made two free throws with 6:06 left in the first quarter. Simone Fields made a layup with 29 seconds to go in the first period to give Louisiana an 18-3 lead at the end of the first frame.
The Bobcats couldn't find an answer in the second quarter and trailed 31-9 when Gordon knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:41 to go in the second period.
Louisiana held a 35-14 lead at halftime and kept up the fast pace in the second half. Troi Swain connected on a 3-pointer to put the Cajuns in front 45-22 with 6:08 left in the third quarter.
Texas State trimmed the lead to 48-33 following two free throws by Kaitlin Walla with 42 seconds left in the third frame.
Swain hit another 3-pointer to give Louisiana a 59-37 lead with 5:22 remaining in the contest. The Cajuns cruised the rest of the way to seal the win.
Taeler Deer, Amber Jones and Erin Peoples led Texas State with 8 points each.
Louisiana will return to action when it hosts UTA on Saturday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
