Cajuns Fall To UTA On Senior Day, 79-76

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team stormed back from a 17-point deficit with 6:31 left in the game, but fell to UTA on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, 79-76 on Saturday at the Cajundome.
 
Louisiana (17-10, 11-7 SBC) tied the game 76-76 when Jaylyn Gordon connected on a deep 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go in the game.
 
UTA (21-7, 14-4 SBC) then went the length of the floor and Shelby Richards made a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Mavericks the win at the buzzer.
 
The Cajuns will be the No. 5 seed in the Sun Belt Conference tournament and face No. 12 seed ULM in the first round on Tuesday, March 7 in a 2 p.m. game at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.
 
The Mavericks held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first frame. UTA took a 23-14 lead after Christina Devers made a 3-pointer with 5:54 to go in the second quarter.
 
Louisiana led 26-23 when Troi Swain knocked down a trey with 2:51 left in the second period.
 
Devers, who was 5-for-9 from the 3-point line, made another 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go and the Mavericks held a 29-28 lead at halftime.
 
Swain, who was 4-for-9 from the 3-point line, hit another 3-pointer to trim UTA's lead to 40-38 with 5:05 left in the third quarter.
 
The Mavericks then went on an 18-7 run to take a 58-45 when Miranda LeJune made a trey with 23 seconds to go in the third period.
 
Gordon nailed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in the quarter to cut UTA's lead to 48-38 at the end of the third frame.
 
UTA took a 66-49 lead when Rebekah VanDijk made a layup with 6:31 left in the game.
 
Louisiana then went on a 15-1 run to pull the Cajuns within two. Gordon made 1-of-2 free throws to slice the Mavericks' lead to 67-65 with 3:03 remaining in the contest.
 
The Cajuns pulled within 71-70 after Swain made 1-of-2 free throws with 30 seconds to go in the game.
 
The Mavericks led 75-71 following two free throws by Devers with 21 seconds left in the game.
 
Fields had a layup with 19 seconds on the clock, but Richards made 1-of-2 free throws to give UTA a 76-73 lead.
 
Swain led Louisiana in scoring with 19 points while Gabby Alexander and Nekia Jones had 14 points each for the Cajuns.
 
Devers led UTA with 19 points while VanDijk had 16 points for the Mavericks.
 
The Sun Belt Conference tournament begins on Tuesday, March 7 with the quarterfinals being held on Thursday, March 9. The semifinals are Saturday, March 11 with the championship game being played on Sunday, March 12.
