Ragin' Cajuns To Host Arkansas State in "Suits and Sneakers" Game

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team looks to return to its winning ways when it hosts Arkansas State on Thursday evening in a Sun Belt Conference matchup at the Cajundome.

Louisiana (10-6, 4-3 SBC) is hoping to snap a two game skid following a 62-40 defeat at Texas State on Saturday and a 79-66 loss at UTA this past Thursday.

Arkansas State (4-15, 2-5 SBC) is coming off an 83-75 defeat to Troy on Saturday after the Red Wolves knocked off South Alabama 56-53 last Thursday.

The Sun Belt Conference, in partnership with the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer, will participate in "Suits and Sneakers" week on Thursday and Saturday to raise awareness and donations in support of Appalachian State women's basketball head coach Angel Elderkin's fight against endometrial cancer.

All student-athletes and coaches will wear black and peach colored t-shirts during warm ups and prior to tip off of games on Thursday and Saturday to show their unity in support of Elderkin. All Sun Belt Conference women's basketball coaches will also wear suits, sneakers and peach-colored ribbons for those games.

Louisiana is led in scoring by senior guard Jaylyn Gordon (18.6 ppg). Gordon leads the Sun Belt Conference in points per game and three-point field goals made per game (2.9). She leads the nation in minutes played per game (39.1).

Junior Simone Fields is fourth in the league in scoring (15.1 ppg) and first in field goal percentage (.562). Freshman Jasmine Thomas (10.4 ppg), junior Troi Swain (9.1ppg), senior Gabby Alexander (5.9 ppg) and junior Nekia Jones (5.7 ppg) are all key contributors for the Cajuns.

Arkansas State is led in scoring by freshman guard Jada Ford (11.9 ppg). Senior Dominique Oliver (10.7 ppg) and junior Akasha Westbrook (10.1 ppg) also lead the Red Wolves.

The Red Wolves graduated their entire starting five from last season and have seven freshmen on this year's squad.

Arkansas State leads the all-time series with Louisiana 50-15, dating back to 1983. Louisiana posted an 80-72 win over Arkansas State in the last meeting, which was held on Dec. 31, 2016 in Jonesboro, Ark. The Red Wolves have won four of the past five contests with the Cajuns.

Louisiana will host Little Rock on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 5 p.m before hitting the road to face Georgia Southern on Feb. 2 in Statesboro, Ga. The Cajuns will then travel to play Georgia State on Feb. 4 in Atlanta, Ga.
