Offense Carries Cajuns To 6-2 Victory Over Sam Houston State

2/20/2016 5:58:00 PM | Baseball

LAFAYETTE, La. – The sixth-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to claim a 6-2 victory over Sam Houston State in front of a crowd of 4,646 Saturday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

"I thought we did a goob job as hitters today," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We are swinging better. We started swinging looser, and I knew that would happen. JT (Jeremy Talbot) and Bab (Anthony Babineaux) do a great job with out hitters, and right now pitching hopefully should be ahead of hitters. So hopefully we can come out tomorrow and do the same script."

The win clinches the series for the Cajuns (2-0) who have now won their last five home opening series at "The Tigue".

Louisiana outhit the Bearkats (0-2) 12-6 in the contest with Joe Robbins, Kyle Clement, Steven Sensley, Nick Thurman and Ishmael Edwards each collecting a pair of hits. Clement had a game-high two RBI and a double, and both Robbins and Sensley homered in the contest to give the Ragin' Cajuns three in the series.

Starter Wyatt Marks picked up his first victory of the season after holding Sam Houston to one run on three hits in 6.1 innings of work. Marks had eight strikeouts in the outing and did not allow a free pass.

Freshman Hogan Harris tossed the final 2.2 innings of the game to earn his first career save. Harris limited the Bearkats to one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

SHSU starter Hayden Nixon was handed his first loss as he gave up one run on six hits in 1.2 innings.

Robbins put the Cajuns on the board in the bottom of the first as he launched a leadoff solo home run over the fence in left. The homer is Robbins' first of the season and fourth of his career.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sensley blasted his first career home run well over the fence in right field to extend the Louisiana advantage to 2-0.

Sam Houston State notched a run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI triple off of the wall in right by Spence Rahm to cut the Ragin' Cajuns lead to 2-1.

Louisiana exploded for four runs on four hits and an error to take a commanding 6-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, second baseman Brenn Conrad was hit by a pitch to bring home the first run of the inning.

Edwards scored on a passed ball later in the inning, before Clement singled in two runs to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Bearkats picked up the final run of the contest in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly to center by Hunter Hearn.

The Cajuns will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. as freshman right-hander Nick Lee makes his debut in a Louisiana uniform. The game can be seen live on MyAcadianaTV, channel 13 on Cox and LUS. It will also be broadcast on KPEL 96.5 FM with Jay Walker making the call.
