Four players in double figures as Cajuns run past Argonauts
LAFAYETTE – Bryce Washington posted a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team built a 16-point lead in the first half and never looked back in claiming a 94-72 victory over West Florida in an exhibition game on Thursday at Blackham Coliseum.
Frank Bartley scored 13 points for Louisiana with Johnathan Stove scoring eight of his 12 points in the second and Jerekius Davis coming off the bench to add 11. The Ragin' Cajuns went 34-for-68 from the floor and 20-for-24 from the free throw line as they led by as many as 29 points while scoring 22 points off 20 Argonaut turnovers.
"As we've said before, we've got to score off our defense and I thought we did that tonight," head coach Bob Marlin said. "I thought the dynamic between our younger guys and our older guys was good. The older guys and our transfers have done a nice job in leading our younger guys. There's going to be some growing pains … that's what this game was for. It was an exhibition for both us and West Florida and hopefully we both came out of it with something."
Louisiana began the game with only four starters on the floor as the Ragin' Cajuns honored 2016 signee Herman Williams, who passed away on June 20 while playing basketball in his hometown of Marianna, Fla.
Washington, who led the Sun Belt Conference in field goal percentage last season, finished 11-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. The junior scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the first half as Louisiana scored the game's first five points and never trailed against the Division II Argonauts. His bucket at the 16:00 mark of the first half began a 6-0 run for the Ragin' Cajuns after West Florida closed to within 7-6 on a basket by Rashaan Benson.
West Florida kept the game close for much of the first half, closing to within 31-24 on two free throws by Benson with 4:41 left in the half, before a 12-3 run gave Louisiana a 43-27 lead at halftime.
Louisiana opened the second half on a 7-2 run as Justin Miller scored on a bucket in the paint, Stove drained a 3-pointer and Jay Wright scored on a steal and layup for a 50-29 lead with 18:17 remaining. The Ragin' Cajuns would extend their lead to 81-52 after Larenz Stalcup sank a pair of free throws with 8:16 remaining before West Florida got as close as 82-64 after two free throws by Austin Somerfield.
Deangelo Legrier led UWF with 16 points with Benson adding 14 and Somerfield 12. Darryl Tucker grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Argonauts, who finished 25-for-64 (39.1) from the floor and 3-for-25 (12.0) from behind the 3-point line.
Louisiana will officially open the season on Nov. 11 when it visits Big 10 opponent Minnesota at Williams Arena.
