Miller scores game-high 21 in collegiate debut for Louisiana
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Dupree McBrayer and Nate Mason scored 15 points each and Minnesota took advantage of cold first-half shooting by the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns to post an 86-74 victory on Friday in the season opener for both teams at Williams Arena.
Â
Amie Coffey added 13 points with Akeem Springs scoring 11 points and Reggie Lynch 10 as Minnesota (1-0) shot 61.5 percent in the first half while holding Louisiana (0-1) to 6-for-26 aim (23.1 percent) in staking a 48-26 lead at halftime.
Â
"(It) was not very good, we got in foul trouble early and our older guys didn't play well in the first half and Minnesota played very well," head coach Bob Marlin said. "We had five freshmen on the floor to end the half and there were a couple of mistakes. We've just got some growing pains that we're going to have to fight through … especially with the foul trouble."
Â
Minnesota opened the game with a 25-9 run and used a 13-2 run to close out the half as the Golden Gophers sank seven of their 10 3-pointers in the opening half.
Â
A bucket by Eric Curry gave Minnesota its biggest lead of the game – 68-41 – with 9:58 remaining before Louisiana began to chip away at the lead.
Â
Freshman Justin Miller, who was of six players who were making their Division I debut, converted on a three-point play with 6:05 remaining to cut the deficit to 73-55 before the 6-foot-7 freshman would drain a 3-pointer that closed the gap to 83-71 in the final minute.
Â
Miller scored a game-high 21 points off the bench for Louisiana, which finished 22-for-69 (31.9) from the floor and 7-for-21 from behind the 3-point line. Bryce Washington recorded a double-double for the Ragin' Cajuns with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds with redshirt freshman Kadavion Evans scoring 11 points.
Â
Louisiana will return to action on Monday when it faces Montana State (0-1) in an 8 p.m. contest in Bozeman, Mont.
