Cajuns Fall To Mountaineers In Rubber Match, 7-4

BOONE, N.C. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team couldn't overcome a six-run deficit on Sunday as the squad dropped a 7-4 decision to Appalachian State in the rubber match at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
With the loss, the Cajuns fall to 30-17 on the year and 14-9 in league play. The Mountaineers improve to 15-34 overall and 7-19 in the Sun Belt.
"We told them after the big day offensively yesterday, that runs were going to be at premium and that we had to go out and match them, and we didn't do that today," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We got behind in too many counts, and got too much of the plate when we had to make pitches."
Starter Wyatt Marks (5-1) was handed his first loss of the season in the contest after giving three runs on seven hits making an early exit after 3.2 innings of work.
ASU starter Jeffrey Springs increased his record to 4-1 limiting the Cajuns to four runs on five hits in 8.1 innings with five walks and five strikeouts.
Appalachian State outhit Louisiana 12-5 in the contest with five players posting two hits on the afternoon. First baseman Conner Leonard led the way offensively for ASU with three RBI and a home run.
The Mountaineers got on the board first in the bottom of the second. App State got back-to-back hits to lead off the inning with a single to center by third baseman Noah Holmes and a double to right center by designated hitter Matt Brill. In the next at bat, Holmes scored on a ground ball hit to first by Brian Bauk to make the score 1-0.
Appalachian State added two more runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by shortstop Michael Pierson and an RBI single by Leonard to take a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Dillon Dobson sent his 11th homer of the season over the fence in right off of reliever Chris Charpentier to lead off the inning and extend the ASU advantage to 4-0. After a Pierson single to right, Leonard hit a two-run homer to left on a 3-1 pitch from Charpentier to give App State a six-run edge.
The Cajuns answered in the top of the sixth as first baseman Greg Davis delivered a 2-out, 3-run homer well over the left field fence to pull Louisiana within three-runs, 6-3. The home run was the fifth of the season for Davis.
App State got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as left fielder Brandon Burris tripled with two outs and then scored on a Dylan Moore wild pitch to increase the Mountaineers lead to 7-3.
Louisiana rallied in the top of the ninth putting runners on second and third with no outs after a walk by right fielder Dylan Butler and a single to left by third baseman Evan Powell. Catcher Nick Thurman brought home Butler on a sac fly to center to make the score 7-4. App State would go to its bullpen and bring in right-hander Robert Whaley who got Brenn Conrad to ground out and Blake Trahan to fly out to right to end the contest and earn his first save of the year.
The Cajuns return to action next weekend as they host South Alabama in a three-game series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field starting Friday at 6 p.m.
