Miscues Cost Cajuns In Sun Belt Tournament Opener

TROY, Ala. – Two Louisiana errors led to four unearned Texas State runs in the top of the ninth as the third-seeded Ragin' Cajuns baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to the sixth-seeded Bobcats Wednesday afternoon on the opening day of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Riddle-Pace Field.
With the loss, the Cajuns (34-21) will face the loser of the UT Arlington/Troy nightcap at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday in an elimination game. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN 1420-AM with Jay Walker making the call. Live stats and video are also available on SunBeltSports.org.
"When momentum changes on you its sometimes tough to get it back," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "The hitters did a good job today. We pitched well enough to win. The momentum switched on us and we didn't make a play. I've said it a 1,000 times, everyone calls this a team game until someone makes a mistake and then it becomes an individual sport. We've got to overcome it and move on. We are in the loser's bracket now, so we have to come back fighting."
Freshman right-hander Dylan Moore was saddled with his third loss after giving up four unearned runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in the ninth inning.
Starter Gunner Leger went 5.2 innings in a no decision. Leger was touched for four runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Reliever Tyler Giovanoni picked up the victory for Texas State (23-30-1) throwing 1.1 scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts, while Cory Geisler notched a one-out save for his third of the year.
Offensively, the Ragin' Cajuns outhit the Bobcats 11-10 in the contest. Junior shortstop Blake Trahan had a game-high three hits with a double and two RBI. Stefan Trosclair, Evan Powell and Dylan Butler each had a pair of hits with Trosclair and Powell each recording a home run.
First baseman David Paiz led the way for Texas State going 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBI.
Powell gave the Cajuns a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as he singled in designate hitter Tyler Girouard who led off the inning with a double to the gap in right center. Later in the inning, Powell came home to score on a ball hit to second by first baseman Greg Davis.
Trosclair extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third as he drove a 1-2 pitch from starter Lucas Humpal over the fence in right center for his 14 homer of the season.
The Bobcats would respond in the top of the fourth as Paiz hit a two-out, three-run homer to left off of Leger to tie the game at 3-all.
Louisiana would regain the lead in the bottom half of the fourth on a leadoff solo homer to straight away center by Powell. After a pair of hits by Davis and Butler, Trahan doubled down the line in right to score two runs and increase the Cajuns advantage to 6-3.
Paiz would strike again in the top of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle off of Leger to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Ragin' Cajuns would tack a run on in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Trosclair to right to make the score 7-4.
In the top of the ninth, Texas State put two runners on with two outs when left fielder Kyle Clement missed a fly ball off of the bat of Granger Studdard that allowed two runs to score cutting the Louisiana advantage to 7-6. After catcher Tanner Hill walked, Trosclair made the second error of the inning as he couldn't come up with a ball hit to second by Ben McElroy. In the next at bat, Paiz singled down the right field line off of Moore to bring home two runs and give the Bobcats an 8-7 lead.
The Cajuns would get a runner on in the bottom half of the ninth with one out, but the Texas State bullpen would get Trosclair to fly out to center and Girouard to ground out to first to end the contest.
