LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns pulled off wins in doubles play and a pair of singles matches, but could not overcome Georgia Southern on Friday, falling 4-3 to the Eagles at Cajun Courts.
Jarred Wynan and Coleman Wahlborg were both parts of doubles and singles wins, but the Georgia Southern (8-11) managed wins at four singles matches – including each of the top three – to pull out the win.
Wynan and Wahlborg teamed up for a (8-4) win over Nico de Groff and Albert Codina Sala at No. 2 doubles, while Will Huyton and Rok Sitar knocked off Christian Kerrigan and Eduardo Landin (8-5) to take the doubles point in the Cajuns favor.
Wynan then took down de Groof (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) at No. 4 singles and Wahlborg handled Christian Kerrigan (6-4, 5-7, 7-5) at No. 5 singles to pick up the second and third points for UL.
But Georgia Southern, playing in their first year in the Sun Belt Conference, got wins at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles to overtake the Cajuns. Edgar Lopez fell to Ristomatti Lanne (6-4, 6-3) on the top court while Albert Codina took down Damian Farinola (5-7, 7-5, 6-1) in No. 2 singles.
Kyle Hoffman handled Huyton (5-7, 6-3, 7-6) at No. 3 singles before Eduardo Landin closed things out with a (6-4, 6-3) win over Rok Sitar on the No. 6 court.
The Cajuns will now turn their attention to nationally-ranked UT Arlington on Sunday when the Mavericks come to Lafayette for a 10:00 a.m. first serve.
