LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshman left-hander Gunner Leger was outdueled by Georgia Southern's Evan Challenger as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team fell 2-1 to the Eagles in the series opener Friday evening at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Leger had a quality start for the Cajuns (15-12, 7-5 Sun Belt) holding the Georgia Southern (18-13, 8-5 Sun Belt) to two runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings despite taking the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season.
Challenger improved to 3-0 on the year settling down after giving up a leadoff home run in the first inning to keep the Ragin' Cajuns scoreless over seven innings of work with nine strikeouts. Challenger retired 14 straight batters before Tyler Girouard's single in the fifth.
"We just didn't make any adjustments throughout the game, we have to make adjustments," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "The guy is a good pitcher. We knew from the ERA that he'd be tough. The way you battle an arm like that is you go out and pitch and you match him. Can't say enough about what Gunner did. He went out and matched him all the way through the game."
Louisiana was outhit 8-3 in the contest by Georgia Southern. Chase Griffin and Hunter Thomas each had two hits in the game for the Eagles.
Both Stefan Trosclair and Blake Trahan extended their hit streaks in the gameas Trahan is now sitting on an 18-game streak. Trosclair is the third Cajuns player to post a double-digit hit streak this season having recorded a hit in the last 10 contests.
Georgia Southern scratched across a run in the top of the first on a safety squeeze bunt by Thomas that plated Kody Adams from third. Adams singled to lead off the game and moved to third on ground ball by Aaron Mizell and a single by Griffin.
Trosclair evened the game at 1-all in the bottom half of the first sending the first pitch he saw from Challenger over the fence in left for his second homer of the season.
Another Cajuns scoring threat came in the bottom of the fifth when Girouard singled with two outs and reached third on a Challenger two-base throwing error during a failed pick attempt. In the next at bat, Challenger punched out Joe Robbins to end the inning.
After six scoreless frames, the Eagles regained the lead in the top of the eighth on their second safety squeeze of the night as Dalton Busby bunted a pitch back to Leger to score Mizell from third. Mizell opened the inning with a leadoff single and moved to third after a ground out by Griffin and a wild pitch.
Georgia Southern's Jason Richman came on in the bottom of the eighth and tossed two scoreless innings of relief to notch his second save of the season.
The Cajuns and Eagles return to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. in game two of the series. Senior right-hander Greg Milhorn will get the nod for Louisiana on the mound as he makes his seventh start of the season. Georgia Southern will counter with right-hander Tripp Sheppard. The two teams will wrap up the series at noon on Sunday.
