Track Makes Final Tuneup Saturday At Leon Johnson Invitational

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field team will make its final tuneup before next month's Sun Belt Conference Championships when it travels to Natchitoches on Saturday to compete in the fourth annual Leon Johnson Invitational at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex.

Louisiana will join host Northwestern State in the 10-team meet that also includes McNeese State, Louisiana Tech, ULM, Nicholls State (women only) and New Orleans among Division I schools. They will be joined by Dillard, Southern Arkansas and Southwest Christian.

Field events begin at 10 a.m. with action in the women's discus and men's shot put. At 10:30 the women's long jump, pole vault and men's high jump get going.

Afternoon field events begin at 2 p.m. with the women's javelin and men's hammer. The women's triple jump starts at 2:30. Running starts at 1 p.m. with the 3,000 meter steeplechase. There is no team scoring.

Louisiana competed last week at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet as Kelci Lyons, Alena Hrusoci and Hanoj Carter each broke school-records, including a pair that lasted for nearly 30 years.

Lyons claimed first-place honors and set a new school record in the 800-meter run after posting a time of 2:09.57 – the second-fastest in the Sun Belt Conference this season. The Breaux Bridge native finished nearly four seconds ahead of Arizona's Kaitlin Warren and eclipsed the previous school record (2:10.24) that was set by Rhonda Acker in 1986.

Hrusoci, a freshman, clocked a school-record time of 1:00.08 in the women's 400-meter hurdles to finish third overall for the Ragin' Cajuns with Jasmin Fusilier recording a mark of 40-6 ¾ in the triple jump to finish second overall and post the fifth-best in the Sun Belt Conference this season.

Carter, who competed at NSU as a freshman, broke a 30-year old Louisiana school-record in the 100-meter dash after clocking a time of 10.20 to finish fourth overall. His time eclipsed the record (10.23) set by Greg Walker in 1985 and it marked the third-fastest in both the Sun Belt Conference and the NCAA East Region and the 11th fastest in the country.

The Shreveport native also clocked a time of 20.92 in the 200-meter dash to finish third overall while posting the second-best time in the Sun Belt Conference, the 19th fastest in the NCAA East Region and 38th best in the nation.

Justin Victor, who is ranked No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference and 13th nationally in the hammer throw, earned a second-place finish last week at LSU, posting a mark of 216-5.
