Cajuns Drop Pair Of Weekend Matches In Texas
2/15/2015 2:31:00 PM | Women's Tennis
HOUSTON, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women' s tennis team hit the road for a pair of matches over the weekend, falling to Stephen F. Austin (4-1) and No. 35 Rice (6-1) on Saturday and Sunday.
Freshman newcomer Kelly Drew kept her season record clean with a win at SFA, moving to 4-0 on the season in singles play; however, the Cajuns (2-2) were unable to find much else working against solid competition on the road.
The Cajuns fell 4-1 on Saturday to the Ladyjacks in Nacogdoches, dropping the doubles point before surrendering three of four finished matches in singles play. Drew picked up the lone UL win against the 'Jacks, moving up to No. 3 singles and needing just two sets to dispose of Vivienne Kulicke (6-2, 6-2).
The 'Jacks picked up wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 6 singles to close out the match and move to 4-2 on the season. Melissa Burckhartt took the first set from Macarena Acosta at No. 6 singles before falling in the final two (2-6, 6-1, 6-1). Denise Maxl Valeria Terentyeva scored the other two Ladyjack points with Maxl getting by Elena Sava (6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles and Acosta knocking off Alexandra Way (7-5, 6-1) in the No. 4 spot.
Louisiana then turned around and took on Rice on Sunday in Houston, a team ranked No. 35 in the latest national rankings. The Owls got wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to stake itself to an early 1-0 lead, getting a win by Natalie Beazant and Katherine Ip over Nelo Phiri and Drew (6-1) at the top singles spot. Savannah Durkin and Solomiya Zinko secured the point with a (6-3) win over Way and Abby Johnson at No. 3 doubles.
Drew once again picked up the lone point for the Ragin' Cajuns in singles play, this time moving up once again to No. 2 doubles and rallying by Ip (2-6, 6-4, 10-5) to move her record to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
But the nationally-ranked Owls were strong throughout the rest of the lineup, not allowing a set to go the other way in the match's other five bouts. That included a (6-1, 6-2) win by Beazant, ranked No. 35 in the country in singles play, over Phiri in the lineup's top spot.
The Ragin' Cajuns will now move on to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a road doubleheader on Saturday. The day will kick off with a 10:00 a.m. meeting with host Southern Mississippi before the Cajuns take on Jackson State at 2:00 p.m.
