Cajuns open 103rd season of hardwood against Wildcats
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team opens its 103rd season of intercollegiate basketball on Friday, Nov. 13 as it will host Louisiana College in a 7 p.m. contest at the Cajundome.

Louisiana, picked to win the Sun Belt Conference title, finished 2014-15 squad that posted a 22-14 overall record and 13-7 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin' Cajuns earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, falling to eventual champion Evansville, in the quarterfinals at Blackham Coliseum.
Led by Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year Shawn Long, the Ragin' Cajuns return nine letterwinners and all five starters from last year's team.
Long, named to the 2015 Lou Henson Watch List, averaged 16.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season and was named to the Lou Henson All-America team in addition to being named a first-team All-Sun Belt and All-Louisiana selection.
The three-time All-Sun Belt Conference pick was one of only seven collegians to play for the U.S. men's basketball team that claimed the bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games. Long enters his final season in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform as the NCAA active leader in double-doubles (52) and total rebounds (1,036). Long is ranked second among active NCAA players in rebound average (10.3) and is seventh in blocked shots (212).
Preseason All-Sun Belt selections Jay Wright (9.1 ppg.) and Devonta Walker (9.4) return for head coach Bob Marlin, along with Kasey Shepherd (9.7), Hayward Register (6.7), Bryce Washington (6.4), Johnathan Stove (5.4), Steven Wronkoski (2.6) and Tiremone Williams (0.9). Newcomer Jay Hedgeman scored 19 points in his debut on Monday against Mississippi College with newcomer Tyrone Wooten adding 16 points. Wooten added a team-high six rebounds and four assists as the Ragin' Cajuns never trailed in the game against the Division II Choctaws.
The schools have played 72 times on the hardwood with Louisiana holding a 52-20 record in the series that dates back to the 1911-12 campaign. The Ragin' Cajuns earned an 85-57 win over the Wildcats in last season's opener at the Cajundome with Walker scoring 20 points in his Division I debut.
Louisiana College, under first-year coach Remi Mason, finished 14-10 overall last season and 14-6 in the Division III American Southwest Conference. Anthony Gaines, Jr. (20.6 ppg.) and Kevin Cottonham (15.7 ppg.) are the top returning players for the Wildcats, who averaged 77.9 points per game last season.
