Walker posts second career double-double in rout

LAFAYETTE – Devonta Walker came off the bench to post his second career double-double, scoring a team-high 17 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns past in-state opponent Louisiana College, 108-68, in the season-opener on Friday at the Cajundome.
 
Kasey Shepherd added 16 points for Louisiana (1-0) with Shawn Long adding 14, Johnathan Stove 12 and newcomer Jay Hedgeman 10. The Ragin' Cajuns recorded their 10th game in school history scoring 100 or more points in a season-opener with the 108 points equaling the most scored since the 1983-84 season.
 
Walker, who scored 20 points in last season's opener against Louisiana College, finished 6-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free throw line in 16 minutes of action. Thirteen of the Ragin' Cajuns 14 players who dressed entered the scoring column as Louisiana opened the game with an 8-1 run and never trailed.
 
Long got the Ragin' Cajuns on the board early with a dunk before a 3-pointer by Hayward Register and a three-point play by Jay Wright pushed the lead to 8-0 at the 17:46 mark.
 
Louisiana College kept the game close early in the first half as it trailed 14-11 after two free throws by Anthony Gaines, Jr., with 12:58 remaining before a pair of free throws and a dunk by Hedgeman, along with a free throw by Tyrone Wooten pushed the lead to 19-11 at the 11:59 mark.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns built their lead to 23-13 on a layup by Shepherd with 10:35 remaining in the first half before pushing their lead to 49-29 on a 3-pointer by Stove at the 1:48 mark and 55-29 at halftime.
 
A steal by Shepherd and dunk by Stove gave Louisiana a 73-43 lead with 11:54 remaining in the game before Walker scored the game's final bucket on a layup with 1:05 left.
 
Louisiana finished 41-for-69 (59.4 percent) from the floor and 22-for-32 (68.8 percent) from the free throw line. The Ragin' Cajuns posted a 48-25 advantage on the glass with Bryce Washington pulling down nine rebounds with Long adding five.
 
Raheem Regis came off the bench to lead Division III Louisiana College with a game-high 22 points and a team-high six rebounds. Gaines, a preseason D3 All-America selection, finished with 12 points for the Wildcats with Kevin Cottonham adding 11. The Wildcats were limited to 21-for-57 (36.8 percent) from the floor, 1-for-14 from behind the 3-point line (7.1 percent) and committed 18 turnovers.
 
Louisiana will return to action on Monday, Nov. 19, when it travels to face ACC opponent Miami (Fla.) in a 6 p.m. CT contest at BankUnited Center. The Hurricanes (1-0) defeated UT Rio Grande Valley, 86-59, in their opener on Friday.
