No. 62 College of Charleston Sweeps Women’s Tennis

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team was swept 7-0 by No.62 College of Charleston on Sunday at the Patriot Point Tennis Complex.

"Today we played against one of the most successful mid-major teams in college tennis," head coach Greg Harkins said. "The Cougars have enjoyed five straight NCAA bids behind five consecutive conference championships. The doubles came down to experience as our two freshman lost 8-6 to a pair of seasoned seniors. In singles, the Cougars showed why they have been so successful as there level was extremely high across the lines."

Despite winning on court one in double, the Cajuns (4-7) dropped the doubles point as the Cougars (4-3) notched wins on courts two and three.

In singles play, the College of Charleston swept competition. Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement both battled in third set losses.

Brooke McAmis clinched the match for the Cougars defeating Nelo Phiri 6-1, 6-2 at the No.2 position.

"We are learning that to break through against ranked programs we must rake the opportunities given to us," Harkins stated. "I was proud of the effort and how we represented as team. We learned a lot from Coach Anastopoulo's squad, and with continued perseverance as we gain experience we will see positive results."

Louisiana returns to action next weekend as the Cajuns host Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 2 p.m. in the first of three straight matches at Cajun Courts.
